Dave -- you can also see Dr. Paul Schmitt, in Commerce Twp. He is affiliated with the Detroit Medical Center and Wayne State Med School. According to him, he has done more resurfacing procedures using the Birmingham product than the rest of the resurfacing doctors in Michigan, combined -- now over 300. The Huron-Sinai Hospital, which Dr. Schmitt uses, is a reasonably new facility, very clean, with an ortho ward that is their pride and joy! Dr. Schmitt was trained in 2006 in England by Dr. Treacy.
Dr. Blaha's numbers are actually more like 40-50 resurfacings using the new technology, and about 150 from the 1980's when plastic-on-metal solutions were used (and failed). There are many doctors listed on the Birmingham website, who have had some training, but most have very limited experience with the resurfacing procedure, though this seems to be changing as the procedure gains acceptance from the Ortho Surgeons.
Dave -- I have a correction to make. The Doctor's name is Dr. Phillip Schmitt -- not Paul. Sorry. I hope this info helped.
Dave, thought you might be interested to know that I am having my hip resurfaced by Dr. Phillip Schmitt on June 16th. Not only was he highly recommended, he was the first orthopedic surgeon to give me a correct diagnosis of hip dysplasia. This explained why I have always had one leg shorter than the other, a funny little walk, etc. If any other Michiganders would be interested in my experience, please feel free to e-mail me. I am actually driving from Bay City, MI to Commerce to have my surgery done. Good luck on your search!
