Crofty Hip Resurfacing UK 2009
I’m from the UK 47 yrs old and I’m going to have my hip resurfaced in 4 weeks time. I have been a runner for 10 years and was just starting to get my times down when I found out about the arthritis 4 years ago. I managed to keep running and did the 3 peaks race last year and this years London marathon in April. The hip has deteriorated rapidly since then and was amazed that the consultant has got me in for surgery so quickly.
December 8, 2009 I’m 13 days post op now and so far so good. I have managed to walk at least a mile every day since . Sleeping on my back was hard for me but I took on Pats advice and stuck a pillow between my legs and I’m able to sleep on my good side for a while. I’m having my staples out later today so hopefully that will feel a bit better too. I have managed without painkillers for most of the time, although I did need a couple yesterday. The only discomfort I have is stiffness and the occasional ache at the back of my knee but it is great to be rid of the pain I had before the op.
December 22, 2009 it’s 4 weeks post op for me tomorrow, all still going well. I’m able to walk easily with the one crutch and have a slight limp around the house without one. I’m still not able to put my sock on unaided or tie my lace, in peoples experiences when were you able to do that? I have no pain anywhere apart from numbness in the scar area. I can walk up stairs unaided quite comfortably . My target is to walk to the top of my local hill on Christmas morning with my daughter as I have done for the last few years, before the op I didn’t think it would be possible but I know I will be ok now!
January 6, 2010 6 weeks post op here. I was really pleased how things were going until 4 weeks but then everything seemed to slow down. Muscle stiffness didn’t ease and groin discomfort didn’t improve. But the last two days have cheered me up and I’m beginning to feel almost back to normal. I have started to sleep without a pillow between my legs, I’m driving again and managing to walk without limping. I won’t get carried away though, after reading other peoples reports, there is still a long way to go. First check up with my surgeon next week.
February 1, 2010 I’m also approaching 10 weeks, my consultant here in the UK told me not to bend the knee to close to the chest until I see him again at 14 weeks as the joint could quite easily pop out. It seems there are so many different opinions on the best way to recover. I am doing a lot of hill walking and I’m happy not to overdo anything until I see him next time.
February 20, 2010 I’m at 12 weeks now and at long last my leg is starting to feel a bit more back to normal. I’m doing loads of long walks in the welsh hills and even had a very slow trot for about 100m today! I have booked myself into a trail race in October in the lake district, even if I have to walk a lot of it!
