Doug Ribley’s Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Brooks 2013
I wanted to share what I believe to be a compelling story related to my BHR procedure. I received my new Birmingham hip 14 months ago from Dr. Brooks at Euclid Hospital (A Cleveland Clinic Hospital) after another physician suggested that I may be a candidate for the BHR as opposed to a total hip. I went through this procedure at Euclid Hospital under the care and direction of Dr. Peter Brooks and his team after returning from a trip to China where I was representing the USA in a team water skiing competition.
From my perspective, the procedure and recovery went perfectly. Honestly, if I didn’t know better, I would never know that I had a hip problem or surgery for that matter. After my twelve month recovery period, I scheduled a trip to Keystone, Colorado to snow ski with my two sons. I have been an athlete my entire life and am a former water ski national champion, football player, pole vaulter and weight lifter. Snow Skiing is something I have done my entire life and this trip, just a few weeks ago (early January of 2015) was the first real test of my new hip. After being a little tentative, I was quickly traversing black diamond slopes with no pain, full range of motion, full strength and maximum stability.
Simply said, I could not notice any difference between my “post-surgery” and “pre-hip-problem” days. A year ago, I could not walk without a cane and today I am 100% and as athletic as ever. I can’t thank Dr. Brooks, his exemplary staff and Euclid hospital enough. Dr. Brooks exceeded his reputation as a leading orthopedic surgeon. His professionalism and skill was second to none. Additionally, Phil Golnick and the rest of the care team were outstanding with my post-surgical communication and care.
I expect to be water skiing competitively again this summer at the division I level. I have attached an i-phone video from my recent ski trip. I researched the BHR procedure on your web site before moving forward with my surgery and I can’t thank you enough for making this resource available. More people who are in the position that we once were in, need to know about the BHR option. Keep up the great work. Thank you!
