Kyle W's Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Mayman 2009

February 17, 2009

On Friday the 13th of February I had a left hip resurfacing at the Hopsital for Special Surgery in NYC. My surgeon is Dr. David Mayman. I was up and out of the hospital yesterday, aided only by a cane. Today I am home and pretty much able to take care of myself. Dr. Mayman has been awesome both before and after the surgery! If anyone is looking for a surgeon in NYS he is amazing!

February 21, 2009

Today is Day 8 with my new hip and I walked about 3/4 of a mile in about 20 minutes, using my cane more for balance and reassurance than weight bearing. I also changed the litter box, cleaned the bird cage and did my laundry! Life is slowly returning to normal. I do 3 sets of 12 exercises 3X a day. I am also walking every day and my PT comes 3X/week. I figure it's move it or lose it :-) My hip gets a bit stiff/sore but nothing a couple of Tylenol doesn't address. The hardest thing I do is still getting in and out of bed, but the more I do my PT the easier that gets. All in All I'm a very happy camper.

February 26, 2009

I am two weeks post op and find that I have to actively think about my gait to avoid limping. Relying on 'doin' what comes naturally leads to a rolling limp which is often uncomfortable. Once I think about what I'm doing, I straighten up and the discomfort goes away. I guess for me the queston becomes how long will I have to think about walking.

March 24, 2009

I saw the Doc today for my 6 week check up. He agreed that it was nothing to bee too concerned about. I can't make it click on command, but based on his exam he thinks it's impingement resulting from a specific movement. The rotation involved in reaching for the outside of your foot. He says the impingement is occurring because the 'opposing' soft tissue is not strong enough yet to hold things in place. That movement, the outside of the foot thing, is my only remaining restriction. All other bending/movement restrictions are done!

April 3, 2009

Today I am 7 weeks post op. I had my left hip resurfaced by Dr. David Mayman at the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC. Today was also the 4th day out of the last 5 that I have gone to the gym; 22 minutes on the treadmill and 23 minutes on the recumbent bike. I'm not going to break any records in the near future, but it feels sooo good to start getting back to some of my old activities.

I still have my share of recovery related aches and pains, but every day I notice something new that I am able to do. I have put all of my helper toys away, including my cane. It’s hard to believe that putting socks and pants on like a grown up could provide such pleasure.

August 21, 2009

One of the most challenging aspects of my rehab was just this, and it still is 6 months out. I was unaware of how altered my posture and gait had become prior to surgery. Apparently I had also developed the ability to alter gait and posture to accommodate the slightest discomfort with out conscious thought. This ability survived the surgery and as I recover I now make myself think about standing straight and walking "normally".

September 2, 2009

I can happily report that 6 months out I have full, unfettered use of my left hip. I doubt there was anything remarkable about my case. In my recovery I have been diligent but not obsessed and now I have my life back

September 21, 2009

I'm 7 months post-op and for the most part doing great. Over the last week I have begun to experience lack of "fine" control of my operated leg. Since Day 1 I have noticed that my left (operated side) foot would lag when I turned to the right. I assumed that this was a muscle strength thing and would resolve as my leg strengthened. Things seem to have moved in the other direction. After walking 100 yards or so, it feels like I have to swing my leg to get my foot where I want it to go. I look almost drunk! It gets worse the longer I walk and short rest tends to reset, but not eliminate, the condition. There is no pain in my hip, but I do feel serious muscle fatigue in my thigh.

February 19, 2010

It's hard to believe that this was a year ago! Last Saturday was my 1 year anniversary. I rarely even think about my hip these days. I saw Dr. Mayman on Tuesday and told him that I felt great. He gave me a clean bill of health. My life is soooo much better with my new hip. Thanks to everyone here for providing an amazing peer support network!

It was around month 9 or 10 post surgery that i finally began to 'trust' my new hip. Until then I microanalized every little twinge and clunk. Don;t underestimate the insult to your hip required to fix it. I still clunk from time to time, but mostly I don't even think about my hip.

January 11, 2011

I am coming up on the second anniversary of m left hip resurfacing. At that time, my right hip was just beginning to show signs of the osteo arthritis that had claimed my left hip. Based on my films, the doc thought the right hip would last about another 18 months. February 13 will mark 2 years and my right hip feels really good. There are no signs of trouble. A couple of things have changed in the last two years, not the least of which is my now properly functioning left hip. Now that it works, I may be placing less stress on the right side. The other thing that changed was that I stopped doing road races (walking). Prior to my left hip giving up I was doing almost a race a week of varying distances, from 5K to marathons. I'm sure eliminating that wear and tear has contributed to my right hip's longevity.

December 27, 2011

I'm coming up on 3 years since my left HR. When it was done the doc thought my right would last another 12-18 months, based on images at the time. My right hip continues to be OK. I don't think there is any accurate predictor.

January 3, 2013

Next month it will be 4 years since I had my left hip resurfaced. I have not had a minute's trouble with it. I would like to addd my vote for HSS, specifically Dr. David Mayman. He is a colleague of Dr. Su. He was there when I went under and when I woke up. I haven't spoken with him in 2 years. I haven't had to.

In addition to the expert surgical team @HSS all after care, including in home PT, was arranged before I left the hospital. I can't say enough about the hospital or David Mayman.

February 14, 2014

Yesterday marked the 5th anniversary of my left hip resurfacing. I have not had a minute of trouble with it. It was done by David Mayman at Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC, and I would enthusiastically recommend him to anyone.

The good folks here helped me immeasurably before during and after my surgery, for which I am very grateful.
