Different information after op
« on: April 13, 2012, 01:19:53 PM »
Hi I have just had both my Hips resurfaced over 6 month period and I'm in the U.K ..I've been reading some of the post and find it strange how different the post op information is between U.S and U.K.I thought that a hip resurfacing was a resurfacing.. Like I'm not aloud to drive untill after 10 weeks ,no running for a hole 12 months and very little information on sex.

There is a huge difference just between doctors in the US also.  I was told I could drive as soon as I was off narcotic pain meds, no restrictions after 6 weeks except common sense and that the femur is at its weakest from 9-15 weeks and back to 90-95% at 26 weeks but takes 2 years to fully heal. I was doing stairs the morning after surgery and had PT 6 times in the first week and 3 times a week after that.

We are also told by the car insurance company that were not covered untill we are sign off from the surgeon ,Surgeon advice is if you can do emergency stop then you can drive but not before week 10.. We were forced out of bed day after surgery and stairs in the afternoon..

Hi Iain, we do get different regimens according to each doctor. Mine was fairly aggressive in some things, like driving. I was driving after two and a half weeks for each surgery. I was able to do most things, but was not cleared to do any impact activities (soccer, Tae Kwon Do, etc. ) until a year had gone by. He did say I could run if it felt Ok at 6 months, but since it didn't for me, I didn't start until 9 months or so.

I think all of us basically listened and hewed to our own doctor's regimen and what our bodies told us.

Thanks for that,I still have a few problems with both and once I figure out how to explain I will post to find answers. At the moment I'm frustrated with them and getting down about the hole thing,I was also young to have them done only 41 :(..

Hi Iain,
welcome to the group. I would like to know why there is so much difference in the recovery protocols between surgeons. However I believe that the conservative approach of surgeons like Mcminn will pay dividends in the end.
Where in the UK are you and who was your surgeon mate?
