Title: Rattling sounds
Post by: gc on April 30, 2009, 01:01:24 AM
I am 5 months post op BHR and have clunking sounds which seem like they are coming from the joint area. There is no pain there and the sounds are only when I shake or bounce my leg with very little weight on it (even brushing my teeth seems to make it rattle). My surgeon says xrays look good and I don't get the feeling or noise when I put weight on in. Doc also had a bone scan done but it came out normal.

Any ideas out there or is it normal and something to live with?

Hi

I had a lot of what I called clunking.  It is the two pieces of the hip device being a bit apart and hitting back together.  I had been told that is because the muscles are not yet healed and tight enough yet to hold them together.  It did not hurt, but I felt it more than heard it.  I got better as time went on.  I am now 3 years post op and can still get a clunk now and then if I sit in a certain way and move.  Again, it does not hurt.  I am also older and not quite as active as the younger folks since I am 64 now.

So clunking is normal.  Here is a little more from Dr. De Smet about it  http://www.surfacehippy.info/faqclunkinginhip.php (http://www.surfacehippy.info/faqclunkinginhip.php)

Good Luck.
