I had surgery Jan. 14, 2009 this year. I go to see my surgeon June 30 next month. It will have been about 5 1/2 months, and I was wondering what I might expect the surgeon to say. Will this be my last doctors visit( for a while anyway) and is there any chance I can get the OK to start running again? please let me know where you all were after 5 1/2 months.. so far I am excellent>> thank you ....
You can review my progress from 5 to 6 months under "Hip Resurfacing Devices, FDA approved device and experienced hip resurfacing doctor" on this website. I was snow shoeing in the alpine at 5 1/2 months. I waited until 6 months post-op to downhill ski. Dr. Su allows impact sports (skiing, racketball, running, etc.) at six months post-op. At 8 months post-op, I've been walking a fast pace (4.8 mph) for 15 minutes followed by running (6 mph) for 15 minutes on the treadmill and I've had no discomfort. I bought an excellent pair of running shoes, Asics Gel Kayano 15, to soften the impact.
Saw my surgeon at the 4 month mark and he told me not to come back until the one year anniversary from my surgery (Dec. 1). He said no running for 6 months and then keep it to a minimum for the rest of the year (a day or so a week with low mileage).
Just passed my 6 mo. mark and celebrated with a 2 mile run on trails behind my house. At the 5 mo. mark I was on the Colorado spending 18 days rafting the Grand Canyon. Lots of hikes and feeling great.
Hope your recovery goes as well.
