I had a LASR in 2005 with Dr. Antoniou in Montreal. My right hip is now giving
me problems and so I recently paid another visit to Antoniou and he indicated
that I am now a candidate for a a right hip resurfacing. As noted in earlier
posts the ASR has now been withdrawn and Antoniou is now using the Adept
prosthetic. However he indicated that, as I had an ASR put in, if I wished he
could still provide the ASR for my right hip procedure. I know nothing about the
Adept except that is more like the BHR than the ASR and requires less tolerances
than the ASR. As Antoniou has an almost perfect record with the ASR (only one
failure out of about 1000 procedures) I am confident that he has the skill and
experience to properly install the RASR however he did warn that Depuy was no
longer "supporting" the ASR. I would appreciate any thoughts that any of you may
have as to the relative merits and disadvantages of the two prothetics and on my
options going forward.
Thanks

Antoniou LASR April 2005
Hi Nicholas
I am sorry, but I don't think most of us can say too much. We know almost nothing about the Adept since it is not FDA approved or used in the US as far as I know. I can only say that DePuy said the ASR was withdrawn from the market. So I am surprised that you can still get one. I know Dr. Antoniou is an excellent surgeon, so I would most likely listen to his recommendation. I thought the Adept was very similar to the BHR, but again, I have never seen one or know anything about it. I am sorry I don't much about either. It is diffiuclt to find out about products that are not FDA approved and are discussed at the Hip Resurfacing Courses. Personally, I would go with what my surgeon suggested since he is very expreinced and use to using the devices. We as patients have no way of understanding the small differences and the instrumentation like the surgeon that placed the devices. Good Luck.

If I can add something for you to consider:
Why not just go with the proven product(s)?
Why take a chance with something that it of limited experience and published data?
These systems have different instruments even if they are similar.
There seems to be no reason not to us a BHR. Just my opinion. This is not a time to experiment.
I wish you well...
