Hi all,
I guess I should start this as a new post. I am now 10 weeks bilateral HR post-op and although the surgery went perfect and everything is healed, I am a little frustrated how much pain there still is. Although I am super happy to be without crutches, every step and every extreme move causes sharp-pain for me in all kinds of places in and around the hip - especially after bein in a resting position for a while.
At the physical therapy they tell me that all this pain comes from the fact that I walked completely differrently for the first 40 years of my life, so everything needs to stretch and build muscle in new ways.
It's hard to believe that this would cause so much pain, but because it's exactly the same on both sides, I guess it must be true.
So my question is whether someone can please tell me how long it really took after a bilateral HR, where there was a completely normal walk (no more waddling) and no more pain at all while walking?
Also I'd be very curious to hear someone describe the kind of pain they still had at around 10 weeks. Obviously the pain from before the surgery is completely gone for me, but what I am experiencing right now is more than just a unpleasant stretch, but several distinct sharper pains at different points throughout each step to the point where I think twice about going to the coffee room at work after I've been sitting for 30 minutes.

Peter, I had bi-lat resurfacing in Jan. 2009. At 10 weeks I was walking without a cane but not real well. I did not have the sharp pains that you describe but more muscle pain and lack of flexibility and strength. My PTs spent a lot of time
fixing my "interesting" gait. With out working with the PTs I don't think I would be walking correctly yet. My only suggestion is to keep working with with your PT. Ted
Thank you Ted for your feedback, this give me a little more hope that I am somewhat on track and I spend a lot of time in PT already.
Peter. I am in the same boat. My first 8 weeks went well. Now however I cannot sleep on the new side. I end up with random sharp pains but only about a two to three. Worse when seated. They advised me its a long haul.....up to a year to work things out. I also have the weird walk. The kicker also is that tomorrow I am having the right side completed also with BHR.
Curious as to your progress and if pt did any good.

I'm only at 3 weeks since my one day bilateral surgery. I still have a lot of tightness but I really have no pain to speak of. I can feel where the implants are and I had an unhappy groin muscle for a couple of days but that worked right out. I've never waddled. From the first day walking in the hospital, the PT told me to stand tall, look at something down the hall and focus on not moving side to side. I left the hospital with only a cane and I'm just starting to give up the cane in the house. Walking outside tires my muscles and I usually have to work hard to get back up my two front steps after my daily ten to twenty minute walk outside with the cane.
Have the pains been there all along or is this something new? Have you talked to your doctor about the sharp pains?
3 weeks sincce my bilateral resurfacing! One hip is better than the other, has anyone else found this too?
Wasn`t aware of any hip trouble til July when suddenly pain hit both to the extent could hardly walk. Longing
to be able to bend again, even to do housework! So glad had both done at the same time, now it`s onward and upward.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated :)
Both of my hips have their own strengths and weaknesses. At 6 weeks they are getting closer but when they started out they reacted completely different to most exercises.
I realize this is an old thread, but there may be new hippys looking for answers. I had bi-lateral resurfacing last December. I think I was using a cane for about four or five weeks. After that I was walking pain free but I still had muscle weakness which caused me to limp for maybe the first ten or twelve weeks.

I like to picture you playing on your Wii, having the time of your life:). I have not waddled from Day One post op.
Last night at 9pm, Hubs ran out to Walmart first but they didn't have anything in our local one; then, he went to Walgreens, and it was like Christmas when he got home!
With new front wheels on my walker, and a larger size TEDS hose that don't bruise my knees with cut off circulation, I was on fire in the middle of the night. I mean, I snuck around on catfeet, (because Hubs desperately needed some sleep), .
So, no, I don't waddle because I asked PT from Day ONE to give me a "pretty gait"....Surface Hippy taught me before my surgery what I needed to avoid from the get go. 'Learn good walking habits so you don't have any gait issues you have to correct later."
Yesterday at 7 1/2 weeks I walked over 4 miles in the woods with no leg pain at all. When I got home I was stiff and fatigued but heat and ice took care of that.
First outdoor bike ride in the afternoon, 11 miles and it showed how weak I am right now.

I had bilateral back in april 2009. I don't recall having "sharp" pains either as many others have mentioned. I did have an abnormal gait until around June when I spent 2 weeks at the beach and spent a good deal of time walking in the soft sand. I guess having to stabilize more must have helped.

7 weeks now, muscle pain, stiffness in legs! worse after started pool exercises, think overdid them! Rested today,
aim to go back tomorrow:)

Phoned his clinic today, very helpful as usual,took time explaining, told me I`d overdone it big time!
Shall definately take their advice.
Advised to refrain til muscle pain has gone, then go in for only 10 mins
instead of 15, slowly does it...
