OK, well not as big as the day of surgery, but I have my four week follow-up appointment tomorrow for my RBHR (actually 26 days). I've been on crutches since day 1 and am totally ready to ditch them, so hopefully the x-rays come out OK. I really want to start putting some weight on this thing and start building some strength back up.
Right now I'm about to head out to Petco Park for the Padres' 2011 home opener against the World Series Champion San Francisco Giants. My friend that I'm going with is in a wheelchair, so we should make an interesting pair. One in a chair and one on crutches - the walking and rolling wounded.
Good luck with your appointment!! I hope is off with the crutches!!
Piedad
I hope you have good news at your follow-up appointment.
Ed
Hey! glad you made it to the home opener, I know it was one of your goals!
Hope you were at least able to parlay the situation into some sweet seats! :)
Bill
Good luck Ed don't try to catch any fly balls.
Free at last!! Free at last!!
OK, I won't go any farther with that allusion...
At my four week follow-up the pictures looked good, incision looked good and doc was happy with my progress.
Bottom line...I can ditch the f#*&ing crutches. One crutch, cane, no assistance -- whatever feels right to me. Walked about 1/3 mile, down the driveway, to the end of the street and back, up the driveway with my cane and my wife with no problems. Walking around the house with no assistance. I figure I'll keep the cane with me for at least the next week to help out if I get tired but, otherwise, it's freewheeling from now on!! Outpatient PT will start next week.
I feel so liberated now. He even said I could start swinging a golf club...
It feels really good to get off the crutches and cane...... just take it day by day, don't push it, listen to your body, and you will do great!!

How about losing those crutches?!! I feel your joy!

Unfortunately, I don't think I can make it to Augusta tomorrow in time for the morning tee-off. Guess I'll have to wait until next year to smoke Tiger and Lefty.

Hi Mike, Your recovery will go into overdrive now. Glad to hear the good news.
-Dirk
Hey Dirk,
I'm almost exactly three years behind you. How are things going with your hips? Are you happy with the results three years down the road?
Mike,
When I was in Columbia, SC two weeks ago for my surgery, I kept seeing the signs for Augusta. I was so tempted to make a quick run down there to check out the golf course (assuming I could see anything). I have to settle for watching the Golf Channel,
CBS, and ESPN this week. There are advantages to recovering at home!
Mac
Mac, I know what you mean.
I (inadvertently) timed my second recovery to perfectly coincide with the first couple of weeks of March Madness. I never watched so much college hoops before in my life. Didn't help my brackets at all, though.
Well done mate...all plus points from here!
Congratulations on losing the crutches. Just be careful.
Walking completely without a cane now, though I'm still getting significant "start-up" stiffness.
Went on a one mile walk with my wife yesterday, up and down hills in our neighborhood at a pretty good pace, with no negative repercussions. Took my cane along for mental suupport but didn't really need it.
I worked on the pool on Saturday for probably two hours. Drained and cleaned the spa, swept down the sides and cleaned up all the algae. Adjusted the pH and added some shock and algicide. I still have to install the new cell for the salt chlorination system and backwash the filter, but I should be ready for "deep water running" as soon as the weather is warm enough to heat up the pool (next weekend, I hope).
The start up stiffness is normal. It is great you will have a pool to do some water walking, stretching and exercises. That helps a lot. http://www.surfacehippy.info/ptarticles.php (http://www.surfacehippy.info/ptarticles.php)
Good Luck. Pat

I'm just jealous that he has weather warm enough to be in a pool. :(
Not warm enough *yet*.
Supposed to warm up to 80 on Friday and Saturday, though, which may help the solar heater to bring the water up to an early season swimmable temperature.
We can only hope...
