Hi walter,

I visited hip specilist here in columbus.
He has confirmed that left & right hip has to
bereplaced. i am very much worried , i am 28 yrs old
male.

I am going to meet a different surgeon for second
opinion.

On the other hand , my uncle who is a doctor in India,
told me after discussing my case to his Orthopedic
frnds.(i have sent my MRI diagnosis to him)
He has asked not to go for THR now as i am young. but
asked to prefer for Hip resurfacing.

Now my question is
1)why did doctor not suggested this HIp resurfacing to
me ,
2)why did he showed me way to THR.

any way i am going get these clarified  in my next
visit.

I am just trying to get some useful info from you ,
looking at you post in the yahoo groups.

If at all i get hip replacement,
1) how will be my daily life after this THR.
2) If everything goes good , how fit i will be to get
married? ( i am not sure its a right question)

i am dipressed by this situation.

Let me know if you can help me with some useful info.

Hi Satheesh

Thank You for writing to me.

It is terrible that most Orthopedic Doctors don't tell patients about hip
resurfacing. Many just don't know about the modern proceedure that was FDA
approved in May 2006 and others just don't believe in it.

I am in Marietta, OH  and went to 2 surgeons in Columbus.  One was
completely against hip resurfacing and the other told me I was too old for
it.  2 doctors here in Marietta OH were completely against hip resurfacing!

But, I know from all the studying I have done that it is a very reliable
surgery - especially for younger people like yourself.  I was 61 and still
wanted a hip resurfacing because it does not cut off the top of your femur
bone.  The doctor just reshapes the top of your femur bone and placed a cap
on it, then places a cup in your acetulum of your hip socket.  That means
that you still have your complete femur bone left in case you ever need a
revision in the future.  It is much easier to revise a hip resurfacing to a
THR than having to rip your bone apart to remove the stem of a THR to revise
it.  THis is how they revise a thr

Heres a description of the bhr vs thr  (http://www.surfacehippy.info/bhrmcminn.php)

Here is an article about AVN by Dr. Bose of India  (http://www.surfacehippy.info/avn.php)
He is one of the best surgeons in the
whole world and writes a lot of articles for the discussion group.

Here are some of the personal stories from younger patients

At your age, you must don't want a THR if you can help it.  If you have a
hip resurfacing, you won't have any kind of restrictions after you heal -
you can do anything you want.  And you won't have to worry about a
dislocation.

I would encourge you to send you x-rays to Dr. Bose of India.  He will give
you a free consultation.  You can take photos of your x-rays with a digital
camera - or send them in anyother digital format.

You Uncle is absolutely right - you don't want a THR.  You are very lucky to
have such a suppportive person to help you.

There are not any doctors in Columbus doing Hip Resurfacing that I know of.
There is one in Cleveland
Peter Brooks MD, FRCS(C) - BHR trained 2006
Cleveland Clinic
9500 Euclid Avenue
Cleveland, OH 44195
Phone 216-444-2273 (toll free 800-223-2273)

Also I think one in Cincinatti.  I would have to look it up.  The problem
with using these newer surgeons that have just trained only a year ago is
that they are not very experienced.  It is very important to use an
experienced surgeon when you have a difficult case for hip resurfacing.  Dr.
Bose has done way over 800 hip resurfacings and Dr. De Smet has done over
2400 hip resurfacings.

If you have relative in India and can afford a trip there - you could not go
wrong using Dr. Bose.  It would cost about $10,000 to $12,000 to go there
and have your hip done.  $6000 for the surgery and the rest would be travel.
Many people from the US have gone there.  I went to Dr. De Smet in Belgium
and it cost us $16,000

Do you have health insurance???

I would try Dr. Brooks if you have to stay in Ohio.
Please keep in touch with me and let me know what else I can help you with.

Please don't let the old fashioned doctors talk you into a THR at your young
age.  You definitely should have a hip resurfacing.  Even if you don't have
your x-rays in digital format - why don't you drop Dr. Bose a message and
tell him about your situation.
