Title: Video of me going up and down the stairs... PAIN FREE in my new hip!

I'm about two months post op.  My wife and I were out to dinner tonight to celebrate her birthday at a local winery...   I ONLY had ONE GLASS.  :)  After dinner we were walking arouind taking pictures... the place is called South Coast Winery in Temecula, CA.. It's a very pretty place.  Our camera is a DSLR but it will shoot video too...  we came across a staircase and I figured, hey, why not shoot a video of me going up and down the stairs...

so here is a quick video of me conquering the stairs...   ;D

Normal people can't appreciate going up and down stairs without pain..but I know all of you do!  before my surgery, i could not have gone up the stairs this quickly, and getting up them would have been very painful.  Tonight it was a snap.  No holding onto the railing, and I went up foot over foot.

The funny thing was on the way down, the only pain I felt was in my RIGHT knee...and my surgery was on the LEFT side!  It wasn't anything bad, just a weird twinge as I went down.. my knees are fine...  but it was kind of funny...i'm shooting a video to show off how good my left hip is and the only pain I could sense was on my supposedly "good" side..   :P

I guess like many of you have said.. the bad side becomes the good side?  :)

anyway... here you go.  my first youtube appearance.. :)  I shot some before footage a week or so before I flew out to Dr. Gross...  i'll have to shoot some more video... and then in six months, when I run or play racquetball... compile a true "before/after" video...

it sure is great to be able to zip up and down a flight of stairs and not grimace in pain every step of the way!!!

Excellent post - made me smile.  Perhaps we should have a hippies gallery on here?

Thanks for the video Sean.  It gives me something to look forward to.  I'm at five weeks today and just looking forward to being able to tie my shoe.

I wasn't able to tie my shoe at 5 weeks either!  It's a slow steady improvment... bit by bit...  be patient and it won't be long before you will be racing up stairs too!!!    :)

I still get an occasional pain on the outside of my hip area... I suspect it's bursitis..it's not in my joint..it's in the tissues... so while I can zip up the stairs.. I have my days where I feel somediscomfort still..but that discomfort is mild enough that a couple of aspririn makes it not noticeable....  i had zero pain when I went up the stairs...  (except that twinge in my "good" knee")  :)

I'm taking it slow...pushing things sets you back.  at six weeks I went to disneyland and walked way too much and my hip hurt for a week and a half...  it's finally back to whewre it was, but i still have that one little intermittent pain that may be bursitis...  if i keep getting better, i'm sure it wil be gone in another few weeks....

my goal is to play racquetball (my all time favorite sport) at six months.  I have a neighbor who is a recently retired #1 ranked professional racquetball player...  i'm going to try and get a "sympathy" game...  ;)  i'll video that!!!

You must live pretty close to me, because Temecula is ony about a 15 minute drive from my house in Fallbrook.

Can't see your video because YouTube is blocked here at work but I know I'll be impressed when I get home and watch it.

I'll be seven weeks out from my second hip on Friday, and I can remember that one of my biggest goals (and worries) back in January when I was contemplating my bilat BHR was to be able to fly to Utah for my nephew's wedding in Park City on April 29.  Here I am now one day from flying and haven't even been using a cane for a couple of weeks.  At this point it's hard to believe that I was ever worried about this.

Keep up the great work!!

That is inspiring!!!!!

My girlfriend did some video on a hike this weekend for a "before" example.  The problem was she couldn't see a real strong limp.  My hip was hurting but I guess all my strengthening and stretching are keeping me from limping too badly.

I am still planning surgery on August 1st.  The pain is causing me to back off training.  I can't get down in the aero on the bike anymore.  And I am noticeably weaker in the left leg.  I am taking everyone's advice not to wait too long.

Thanks again for the motivation.

Dan

You are so right! Are you saying we are not normal?! LOL   ;D

yeah... we aren't normal...  WE'RE BIONIC!!!!

;D

it's funny how simply things like putting on your shoes, clipping toe nails, walking up stairs..  just sitting totally straight in a chair - are such a big deal!  Most people take all that stuff for granted.  it just shows how you never really miss stuff like that, or appreciate the simple things until they are gone.

going through a hip resurfacing is nothing compared to the procuedures people have gone through with life threatening diseases.... but even going through hip resurfacing has made me "stop and smell the roses" and really appreciate the little stuff.  just sitting in my chair as I tyhpe this.. i'm not in pain.  when I go to sleep at night.. i don't have throbbing pain in my hip...  it's awesome!

MORE VIDEOS TO COME!!

I know what you mean about tying the shoe lace.  I was out on a walk recently and my boot lace came undone.  I could not find a bench to sit on and had to ask someone walking by to tie my boots up again.  The crutches help get sympathy

Hey Phill, Sean - one thing I used (suggested by occupational therapist) was elastic shoelaces for my sneakers. They come in different colors, sizes, etc.  You tie them like normal shoelaces, but they give way so you can slide your feet into the shoes. They provide plenty of support as you're walking, but don't come undone.

And you never have to tie them, because you just slip your foot right in. I bought them through Amazon, but they are, I'm sure available from many places. Until I could tie my shoes, these gave me freedom from having to ask for help.

Speed Laces! Sometimes called EZ Laces or Yankz! You can get them at any running store...I use them for racing. Love them! Put them in my shoes prior to surgery.

Hernanu

Thanks - I shoudl have thought about them - the kids have them in their shoes but I am just an old fart - I have good progress over teh last couple of weeks so I think I could tie them now.

Later in the summer when i get my second hip do I will put the speed laces on my shoes prior to surgery and all the other things I have learned from this site and during recovery  ::).

Cheers - Phill
