Title: Tramadol nights
Post by: Groundhog on July 16, 2011, 06:33:42 AM
Another question.
I am now 10 days post op. I only take tramadol at night to help me sleep. I am still using a pee bottle as getting out/in bed and negotiating a dark house with sleeping dogs all over the floor is too difficult.
Last few nights I went 5 times and produced 1 1/2 litres (2 1/2 pints) which seems a lot. Is this because of the tramadols diuretic effect?
I must add that I am finding all the useful info on this site a great help.

Don't know all of the side effects of Tramadol, that didn't pop up as one, but I drank a lot of fluids post surgery, so I was not surprised to go a lot. I had bad night sweats for three weeks or so, but I attributed that to the recovery from anesthesia or the tylenol I was taking.

If you're concerned about it, don't be shy about calling your surgeon's office. I sure wasn't.

Tramadol nights - sounds like a great name for a rock band.

I can't help you with that since I left the opiods at the hospital, and I think I didn't sleep super well for a few days at home because of it, but I agree with Hernanu, talk to the prescriber.

Interesting observation and question.  Here's a pure guess - not the Tramadol but related to the post-op swelling.  All that fluid has to go somewhere and I'm guessing that's why pee volume is up.  Is swelling going down?

Good luck with your continuing recovery!

Actually since I posted the question yesterday the swelling has gone down some (I can get my jeans on!) and pee volume has reduced.....
Going to try a 1/2 mile walk today.
Thanks everyone.

Well perhaps didn't manage quite 1/2 mile but not far short. Also went to the pub for a couple of pints of Timothy Taylors and lunch.
No Ill effects at all. In fact today I feel better for it.

Well, you didn't say 1/2 mile and a couple of pints... The adrenaline kicks in when the destination is pints...  ;D

Mmmmm...Landlord :)

Keep it up mate, slowly but surely, and listen to your body...do quite a bit when you feel like it (reward with a pint or two) but when you do not feel like it, rest.
Also reward this with a pint or two for recognizing the need for recuperation ;)

Tramadol isn't a diuretic, it's an opioid and a mild S.S.R.I. My favourite painkiller - Taylor's Landlord is pretty good too!

HnH - I recall you did some pretty aggressive stuff close in after surgery.  I think I was doing 1/2 mile walking with cane at about 4 weeks post op.  I didn't push it before that, though.

I can understand the motiviation to walk a 1/2 mile if there is a pub at the end.

An update on this topic. I have stopped taking tramadol and my night pee levels have plummeted. Last night I slept from 10pm to 8am without having to go once.

Sweet to have those long sleeps, isn't it?
