Title: AVN vs. OA Diagnosis
Post by: bigloaf on November 04, 2011, 03:49:13 PM
Hello everyone.  This is my first post even though I've visited the site often.  On 11/30 I'm having HR done on my right hip by Dr. Michael Clarke in Syracuse, NY.  If anyone has had him as a surgeon for hip resurfacing, I would appreciate your input on your experience.

I've read that avascular necrosiis has a much higher failure rate for hip resurfacing than does osteo arthritis.  Any input on that?

Hi  Welcome to Hip Talk.

I have a numer of Dr. Clarke patient stories here  http://www.surfacehippy.info/hipstories.php#Dr. Clarke (http://www.surfacehippy.info/hipstories.php#Dr.%20Clarke)

There have been some Dr. Clarke patients on this group.  Hopefully, some will be reading this weekend and talk with you.

He is one of the top experienced hip resurfacing surgeons. You should do well with your surgery.  good Luck.

Pat

hi, i have AVN of both hips and have both replaced with BHR's, One has been excellant with no pain and one that had to have a bone graft done due to the deterioration is painful. I suppose it depends on how bad the AVN has got and the damage it has done

I think you'll find some useful information about that in the Australian registry posted by Pat at this location:

I looked at the 2011 registry, the AVN vs. OA information is on page 91.

I don't know much about AVN beforehand, but I do know that the procedure of reshaping the femoral head to fit the femoral compenent can promote AVN in the neck due to reduced circulation to the head, although it's not very common.  I would want to go with a very experienced surgeon if I had AVN simply because of the potential for decreased blood flow to the upper parts of the femur.

Here are several articles about AVN by Dr. Bose, they will help explain more about AVN and hip resurfacing.  Some surgeons have great results with AVN like Dr. Bose and there are others that I know of will not do resurfacing for AVN.  So you need to find out if your surgeon has a good track record of using resurfacing for AVN.
