Title: post op crosstrainer use?
Post by: djwood on April 08, 2012, 08:55:47 AM
I have an eliptical crosstrainer which I love, and I was wondering as it's just like walking but without the impact whether or not I could start using it again a couple of weeks or so after surgery. The motion is a bit like a bicycle motion, but doesn't raise the knee up very far.
Has anyone used one of these for PT post op?

I wouldn't have though that's a problem but as ever always check with your surgeon.

I did an elliptical with my outpatient PT after about 7 weeks. It was fine, caused me to have the usual muscular setback when I started, but was comfortable afterwards. Check with your doctor / PT person, but at 7 weeks it was fine for me.

As Danny said; check with the doctor.  Some on here did have restrictions early on the use of an elliptical trainer.  I started using one at around the 2 month mark.  It feels great and never bothers my hips.  It's part of the long way back to being a runner again.  Only short distance this time.

Dr. Gross told me 6 weeks for the elliptical. I did see a 75yo orthopedic surgeon on one at my club the other day using one when he was 14 days post op on his second THR. Seemed dangerous to me. I see a fall being a real consideration at that age early stage of recovery.
