Title: Skin around surgical site is warm to touch. Normal 6 weeks post-op?
Post by: KRHine on July 05, 2012, 10:33:57 AM
When I place my hand over the area around my incision I notice it's much warmer to my hand than my non-surgical side. I would expect that the first 2-4 weeks but now that I am at 6 weeks I wonder if that is typical and if others found the same thing?

Thanks,
Keith

Hey Keith, welcome to the site.

Does it look reddish? At six weeks the incision should be in good shape. I'd check in with your surgeon and see what they think.

No, I did not experience that at six weeks. Certainly not "much warmer" at that stage. I am at 12 or so weeks and it is kind of cold to the touch, like the rest of that area.

Not a doctor, but: Have you taken your temperature? If no fever I would be less worried, but if you are concerned I would call your surgeon, as has already been advised.

Good luck, I hope it's nothing.

Thank you for feedback! I spoke with PA at surgeon's office and she said that is normal and could be warmer than non-surgical side up to six months. As long as incision is not tender to touch and does not have pink/purple color radiating away from wound then all is normal and no infection  which is the case for me.

I noticed my incision is slightly warmer than the rest of my leg.  I just figured it was the blood rushing there for healing.  My scar looks fine for 6 weeks.

Good to hear, Keith - it's always good to check on anything that disturbs you. Part of the recuperation.

Keith, I hit my 6 month mark yesterday and still have a 'warm' area in the middle of my scar/surg site.  I chalk it up to healing powers.  I see my dr next week  and am going to ask, but am not worried about it.

I know my incision site stayed warm weeks and weeks after surgery; especially after workouts.  I iced it pretty regularly and that would bring the temperature back down.  But, as soon as I was active again it would still get hotter than the other side.  Still does, and I'm 6 months out.  Just don't notice it much now though.
