Title: Does the patient have any say in the type of device used.?
Post by: lgbran on September 09, 2013, 06:57:07 PM
Seeing the surgeon tomorrow and no doubt at the conclusion of the visit will be better informed.
With regards to Devices do I as a patient have any say into the type or brand used. I am hoping to have a right hip resurface done?

Surgeons usually train to use one or two different types of devices but will make the choice about which is best for you. The most important choice for you is to use the most experienced hip resurfacing surgeon you can get in front of and let them choose the device.

As chuck has said most surgeons will use mainly 1 possibly 2 devices. Ask what they use and what their results are like. The most important thing is the skill of the surgeon, the next most important factor is a proven device now most top surgeons will use the bhr C+ biomet etc so that's taken care of its self.

I was told by a surgeon when first diagnosed and I was looking into the latest most Gucci devices and he said what you want is the device with the longest most proven track record.

Hope this helps

Yeah is does much appreciated. I know he has weeded out a lot of the dodgy devices which is reassuring. I gather here in Australia we don"t have the array of devices available in other countries.
Thanks again

Yep using the BHR device. Only approved devices used. 10% of hip surgery is hip resurfacing and continues to decline here in Australia

Well, that has a great track record when put in correctly. Good for you.

Unfortunate that it declines, the Australian registry has been a great source of information and should back up HR as a good procedure.
