Title: Rugby
Post by: ashee111cat on November 09, 2014, 02:08:19 PM
Hi all,
I'm 49, as fit as most 35 year olds (apart from the new right hip, obviously) and have always played squash, tennis, cricket and rugby. I fully intend to resume said activities, but my surgeon is not too keen on the rugby for fear of fracture. Thoughts anyone?

I do some fairly extreme stuff like judo but personally I wouldn't go back on a rugby pitch. For me there's too many variables that would be out of my control

Hi Danny - thanks. I'm only really concerned about impact - do you think that would be more severe than a judo landing? Cheers

Absolutely mate in judo you expect to get thrown and your fighting 1 person. In rugby you can be hit from any angle by multiple people. It's one of the few things I will avoid.

THanks mate. Not the answer I wanted, but appreciate your honesty. At the moment I'm struggling in the gym a bit anyway.

Fairone mate, I know it can be hard. Personally what I do is I weigh risk and reward up. Even with judo I refuse to do something's in the warm up etc just cos I'm not really going to get anything out of it but potentially it could harm me.

I would think about what position you could play in. Are you talking real rugby or League? ;D.
If you are first or second row you are not going to be moving too quick when you get hit or if. I have not played since my BHR but I am a bit of a special case. I have fractured mine and healed.
When I played I managed a whole game once without actually handling the ball so hence didn't get tackled once. Went in for a few.

THanks Jason - second row: you're right, wouldn't know what to do if anyone gave me the ball! My physio is all for it. As you say, no chance of me moving very fast anyway! If I say our #6 is 65 it'll give you an idea of the standard (great way to work up a thirst tho!)

Forgive my lack of knowledge, but do you have any padding when you play rugby?  People have played ice hockey professionally after a HR and as everyone knows there is a ton of hitting in hockey.

God no! No pads in rugby mate!!! It's like your American Football but without all the fancy pads :D

Some sort of padding could be a way forward tho - I've read about hockey players resuming pro careers. Also, it must be one hell of an impact for skiers too (or is it only ones who don't fall over?)

I can't think of any padding which would afford the hip any extra protection though :/

I'm not sure you will ever get a surgeon's blessing to return to rugby even with normal hips so I wouldn't worry too much about that.
There have been several posts on this site where people have fractured their fully healed resurfaced hips in accidents but the resurface always holds up. I haven't heard of anyone's hip breaking at the device except for the few foolish ones who didn't follow the healing period before returning to impact.

I've seen the future and it's moto-cross padded shorts!!!! My surgeon did say I could equally likely break the good hip, so I'm gonna give it  go. Could be run over by a bus tomorrow!!
