Title: Medical support once you've returned home
Post by: jss on December 21, 2014, 11:45:53 AM
In 2009 I went to Barcelona, Spain for spine surgery that wasn't available in the US. After being problem free for 18 months I decided that I wanted a checkup. I had no problems, but just wanted a qualified surgeon to take some x-rays and pat me on the head and send me on my way. It took six weeks for me to find a surgeon willing to do a "well baby" check up on me. All objections were because I went out of the US and some seemed even to want to punish me. The most snooty saying, "Well, going to Spain is a decision that YOU made. If YOU want a checkup then YOU will have to go back to Spain. It is not OUR responsibility to provide that service!"

We're in Dallas and I'll be having surgery with Dr Gross in South Carolina on Jan 5. My PCP will be happy to treat me as he is able; but not being an orthopedic surgeon, he can only do so much if, God forbid, I have complications. Did those of you that traveled across state lines for surgery have the aforementioned type of problem getting medical support when you got home? Any recommendations?

Hi, JSS.

This is sort-of a non-answer answer, mostly because I didn't require post-surgery care for a complication.

But......Dr. Gross and his staff will be available to you via phone or email for support if needed.  They are SO good, that I find it unlikely you'll have issues.  His track record is extraordinarily good.

I had a couple questions in the weeks following surgery, and they responded quickly to me.  But, I suppose i would call a few places and ask.  Yes, there are many doctors out there who want to make you feel bad for choosing another doctor.  It's ridiculous.

Good luck!
