Title: BHR and the FDA banning use for anyone 55 or older.
Post by: chriswalton on November 16, 2016, 08:31:01 PM
Has anyone heard anything about the FDA banning BHR on anyone over 55. I'm returning (Left BHR 10/08) for my other hip and Dr Klug (same Doctor) at Kaiser Hospital said the FDA would not allow on anyone over 55.
All my research only shows no use of smaller heads on women.  I am male 60 with good bone density.

Hi  As far as I know, FDA has nothing to do with the use of the BHR.  Smith and Nephew made the decision to no longer provide small sizes for small men and women.

Here is the article

Some surgeons still do BHR for small men and women like Dr. Su.

Dr. Gross still does HR for everyone with the Biomet.

Dr. Prtichett still does everyone with the Synovo Preserve.

Also Dr. Mont is still doing HR for men and women:

Here is a list of articles all about it including the Smith & Nephew statement and each of the doctors about doing women and small men.

Also, there overseas surgeons are still doing hip resurfacing for women  and small men.

I hope that helps.  You can still get a hip resurfacing, man or woman, if you are a good candidate.

That claim doesn't sound right to me either. Ask the doctor when that happened and where he read it.

I am no expert and am not following the news so closely right now, but remember the FDA issued some rule making about six months ago for MoM hip implants that specifically excluded HR devices. (I think the upshot of the rule making was that data needed to be presented on MoM THR devices for them to be used---and I don't think  any are on the US market now anyway.) Some quick googling doesn't pull up any FDA news about BHR and over 55. In the last three years there have been studies showing that BHR/HR performs exceptionally well in men UNDER 55, but to conclude from those studies that men OVER 55 shouldn't have them doesn't follow, nor does it follow that the FDA would ban over 55 use.

I had a BHR done by Dr. Marwin in NYC last year at the age of 58, and he mentioned nothing about an age restriction.
