Hello everyone, Had my right hip resurfaced by Dr.Brooks in Cleveland on 5/23/2018. Procedure went well and all the support people were wonderful. It's now been 2 1/2 weeks and my operated leg has swelling (mild) and the same foot is also swollen. Dr. Brooks team told me swelling is to be expected, but for how long? What is the best way to reduce this? My incision is fine and the range of motion is quite good already. Walking with 2 crutches a total of 2-3 miles cumulatively each day and doing the recommended exercises 3x per day. My pain or discomfort is almost nonexistent. Using Tylenol and celebrex for pain and inflammation as the narcotics were too upsetting. I'm just wondering of others experiences at this time. Dr. Brooks wants 2 crutches for 6 weeks. Been trying to get the 75% weight on that leg as he recommends. Any comments?
Sounds pretty normal to me. It will gradually reduce on its own. Unless it's freakish I wouldn't worry about it. I can't remember how long it took for mine to go back to normal. Even after it was normal, a lot of activity or its opposite, sitting too long, would cause it to swell a bit again (it always went back to normal).
Sounds like your swelling is normal, or maybe less than normal, so no worries. It should go away over the next week or two. Elevating your foot as much as possible will accelerate the process; elevating above your waist will help, and above your heart is best. My wife gave me vitamin B6 for my second surgery to minimize the swelling. She quoted a surgeon who said that it can get rid of most of the swelling in a few days rather than four weeks. Something really worked, because I had less than ⅓ the swelling after my second surgery than I did after the first. Lots of icing is also great; my surgeon sends everyone home with a Polarcare unit to help with the swelling, and I think that helps as well.
