Hi Marie

I have heard of Dr. Goldberg and so have several other people on this discission group.

I had my hip resurfaced in March 2006 and he had not done many at that time. I live in Marietta, OH.  I also did not have health insurance and could not afford surgery in the US unless a hospital would give me a discount due to our poor financial condition.  The Cleveland Clinic did not seem very eager to give discounts like some of the Columbus Ohio hospitals will.  But I could only get a free or almost free THR in Columbus.  Also the FDA had not approved the BHR in this country yet.  There were still many doctors doing hip resurfacing, but with other hip devices.

So I choose to go do Dr. De Smet in Belgium. I used my credit cards and the whole trip and medical portion for my husband and I was $16,000.  Best money I ever spent in my life.

Dr. Goldberg has done about 95 hip resurfacing surgeries according to Saptia - another discussion group member. I know he had one femur neck fracture early on because I have a link to a story posted about a fellow that used him and had to have a revision the first year. http://www.bananarepublican.info/Hip_Surface_Replacement.htm (http://www.bananarepublican.info/Hip_Surface_Replacement.htm) Many doctors have a few revisions or problems during their learning period with hip resurfacing.  Hip resurfacing is a much more difficult surgery than a normal THR. Studies I have posted on my website and others I have read suggest a doctor needs 50 - 100 surgeries to become experienced.

Her is Saptia's response that tells about Dr. Goldbert's record, it was an earlier reply on the board:

Hi Lori:
Thank you for answering my message.  I thought all these messages and the board place were virtual!  Imaginary hippy friends.   But it's real!!
I have come to learn that the skill of the doctor is most important and so I am trying to decide between Dr. Victor Goldberg at University Hospitals and Dr. Brooks. When I called Dr. Brooks the PA told me he has done 75 HR. Dr. Goldberg is at 95.  Is this a significant difference?  Also Dr. Brooks uses BHR and Goldberg Wright.
I have an appt with both at the end of September.  It seems so far away.  I am constantly in pain and it feels like my life is out of my control, or that my life is controlled by the pain.  Ufff...
