Hello everyone,
I am 40 years old, and I live in Ludwigshafen (Germany). I am, I think, very active, (volleyball, MTB, swimming, snowboarding and much more), I have 3 small children and around 6 years ago years I was diagnosed with FAI, hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis.
Long story short, after an ice hockey training session, the muscles in my groin hurt a lot. After about 5 months of physiotherapy, my orthopaedist decided to x-ray my hips and do an MRI. The above diagnosis was made at that time.
Not much more was said / done, the question was no longer “ifâ€, but “when†I would need a joint replacement.
By using self massage and by staying very active, it was no problem to go on living without major pain.
In the last few years, I had time to find out about surgical options, and I first discovered the “Surface Hippy†forum and became very interested in Hip Resurfacing.
Since the pain did not get better (surprise!!), actually quite the opposite I finally booked a surgery for the 14th of April.
As you can imagine, I have tons of questions and fears, although I actually cleared a lot of them with some doctors. During my research I contacted Koen Desmet and Raimund Völker (who will be operating me in Munich).
Although they both reassured me a lot about sport activity etc... I ask about your experience.
- Has anyone of you been operated by Raimund Völker?
- I play Volleyball, and I plan to play again. I am a middle blocker, so I jump a lot. Both doctors see no problem at all returning to VB, R. Völker even told me that I could be returning after 3 months, which I find really optimistic. I wanted to give me something like 9-12 Months before starting jumping. I know there is some people playing VB, can you give me more detailled experience.
I will probably have more questions along the road, but it was important for me to say hello and present myself since I am observing silently since quit a long time. I also wanted to say thanks to all of you, especially Pat for creating this forum. I don’t think I would have find out so easily about Resurfacing without it, and it surely reassure me a lot to know, that I would have a good option when the pain would be too much.
Best regards,
Hi blobywan, I see no one responded to your post. I can only offer my experience with a resurfacing with Dr. Gross here in the states.
I'm an avid golfer, so more twisting than jumping, but I was back playing golf at 6 weeks. I know Dr Gross recommends 6 months before intense sports. At this point (2 years out) I would feel quite comfortable doing anything without much concern, I would say there's definitely a very good possibility of you getting back on the court sooner than you think.
The biggest thing is you'll be doing in WITHOUT pain. :D
I know how it feels leading up the procedure, I was very nervous. I'll say this, my other hip is starting to show some signs of wear and tear and I won't wait one second after knowing it needs to be replaced to sign up for hip #2. I have NO REGRETS at all.
I hope if nothing else I can give you a little comfort leading up the big day. It'll be here and over before you know it.
Good luck and keep us posted !
