Title: Stability when bending 90 degrees
Post by: MattFL on February 11, 2025, 08:43:15 AM
Did anyone else have looseness feeling (clunking for lack of better description?) when bent over 90 degrees, and how long did it take to resolve if it did resolve?

I'm 21 weeks post-op, improving every day and feeling fantastic!  The biggest remining issue is when bent over 90 degrees at the hips, such as if doing rows with weights or RDLs, etc.. the new hip feels like it's not planted firmly in the socket, like it can move just a tiny bit.  It doesn't feel like it's going to come out or anything, but I can feel it clunking around a little bit.  In any other position it feels very solid and stable.  When stretching, trying to do a split, it actually feels more stable than my natural hip did before surgery.  But in this bent over position it's still a little loose.  Did anyone else have this, and did it resolve?

Plug “clunk” into “Search” at the top of the page for TONS of clunk stories.  Quite common.

Thanks for the reply.  I'm actually curious about the clunk specifically when bent over.  Initially I had no clunking at all, then a little bit for a little while, now only in this case when bent over.  So I'm curious if anyone else had this specific behavior, and if it went away.  :)

I’ve had this exact same thing and it’s always the worst when bending over and reaching for anything on the ground. I feel like mine is a little better but I’m starting to think that’s just how it’s going to be for me. It doesn’t hurt it just makes you think some thing isn’t right when it’s probably fine.

How far post-op are you?  Also if you bend at the waist 90 degrees then stand back up strait, do you get a little pinch feeling in the joint as you straiten out?

Even if this is permanent, it's still soooo much better than the natural joint was at the time of surgery, but it would be really fantastic if this goes away one day. :)

I am one year on my right and six months on my left.  I don’t have any pinching in the joint when I stand up.  I did read that some people have some pain or sensation of when some tendon moves across and gets caught on a notch somewhere.  I didn’t have that.

I still do have soreness in my right hip flexor when I am bringing my leg up to a 90 degree marching position.  I’m starting to wonder if that will ever go away.  My right side was in bad shape though according to my Dr.

Hopefully your right will get better.  I'm about 22 weeks and my range of motion is still improving quite a bit.  I just realized about a week ago that I'm able to sit on my backside on the ground with both knees bent and my arms around my knees, I could not do that before surgery.  I tried yoga yesterday with my wife and afterward the muscles in the new hip definitely felt like they got a workout, but then I rode almost 20 miles on the bike and today it's back to normal, so I think yoga is going to be a good thing.  Maybe it will help you too?

I for sure need to do yoga.  I was not very flexible before and now it’s worse.  I did PT in December and it was one of the things they recommended.  Both for flexibility and to improve core strength.

Check out “Yoga with Adriene” on YouTube.  She is an excellent instructor.  Her beginner yoga programs are very helpful.
