Dr. Gross Hip Resurfacing
« on: June 22, 2007, 07:10:43 AM »
Hi,

I am a 55 year old male.  Dr. Gross performed HRS on my right hip
January 3, 2007.

Although everyone might not have my experience I would like to share it
with others.

Briefly:

Surgery at 0730 weds 1/3/2007

I was able to walk almost without a limp at 0800 Thursday.

Dr. Gross asked me to use my cane in case of a spasm, I did but didn't
need it.

Friday morning I gathered my stuff, put it on cart, wheeled it into the
elevator and met my ride in the lobby.

we stopped at Hooters for oysters and beer on our way back to Spartanburg.

I had no help at home, I really could have driven myself home from the
hospital if my car had been there.

I returned to work Monday after lazing around all weekend.

It has been one month now my life is improving every day in every way.

Thanks
Mike

Hey Mike

Fantastic - congratulations on being a surface hippy.  I love stories like
yours. They are very inspirational.  Unfortunately, most of the hippies on
the Yahoo Surface Hippy group never believe them, but I like to post them on
my website.

I had a quick and easy recovery too.  Not quite a quick as yours, but I had
no pain and no problems.  I spent my first night after being released from
the hospital on day 2 1/2  at the Holiday Inn lounge in Beligum drinking
Belgium beer with my husband and 7 other hippies.  It was a fantastic
experience.  We meet in the loung every night and had a great time while we
were in Belgium.

People just don't believe that some recoveries are quick and easy.  I think
all recoveries should be talked about.  That way new people have an idea of
both the quick and the difficult recoveries.

Again, Thank You for your input.  I will post it on my website under hippie
stories!

I also wish you the very best with your recovery and hope you have the Best
summer you ever had in 2007!

OK.  I live in Dayton, Ohio.  I am female, 48 years old.  My hip dysplasia was detected when I was about 1 year old.  I spent the next 8 months with the Pavlik Harness and was then declared perfectly "healed"  I spent my next 42 to 43 years without noticeable problems.  Had three children and led an active life.  Started having pain a few years ago and NEVER thought it was my hip.

Doctors can't tell if the OA I have now is from my problem at birth.  But here I am.
First I was considering THR because never hear of HR.  Then found doctor in Cincinnati, Swank, and in Cleveland Clinic Brooks and Case Western, Goldberg.  All near my home.  But....

Not convinced because they dont' seem to be really into HR according my internet search (except maybe Brooks) and have done less then 100 and because I am starting to become obsessed between the pain and time running I think as of today I have decided to go with Gross in SC.  His office was very prompt and detailed answering my request.  I am a little bit overwehlmed about going far from home and friends and feel a little guilty that my husband has to take time off because he has a very busy practice and is very complicated to plan time off with this short notice.  But....  this is important and he is supporting me.  I accept things won't be easy.

Today I am going for my dexascan and hope to mail everything to Dr. Gross in the next two to three days.  I am REALLY hoping to have this done not later than October.  My quality of life is not good.

Thanks for reading

Hi Sapita

I think you are making a good choice in using Dr. Gross.  I have had my hip resurfaced, as I am sure you know, and have been reading and learning about hip resurfacing for a couple years.  I am a firm believer that you can't go wrong with the very experienced doctors, especially if you have a difficult case.  I have studies on my website showing a doctor needs at least 50 - 100 hip resurfacings to become experienced. I really want a doctor with much more than that.

Dr. Gross is not that far from Ohio. Closer than Belgium where I went or India where Dr. Bose is.

You don't get many hip resurfacings in your life and this is very important. It is worth the trip to get Dr. Gross's experience.  You husband will feel better knowing you are using a really good doctor.  Usually, people that use the more experienced doctors tend to have faster recoveries.  Mainly because the doctors get in and out without disturbing anything they should not in your hip. Also they have done so many resurfacings, they know what to expect from their patients.  There are many, many happy Dr. Gross Patients.

Have you talked with Pat Dukes on the Yahoo Group??? She is a Gross patient and helps many people traveling to SC.  If you don't have her email address, write to me  pwalter@surfacehippy.info   and I will send it to you.  I don't want to post her email address on this public forum.  She will be of great help to you and help calm any of your fears about traveling.  She often meets with people when they are there for their resurfacing.
