Hi, I am a newbie to this kind of stuff. I would like to contact some New Zealand persons about their experience with Hip Resurfacing. I have been on crutches for the last 5 years on and off and have found out that it really could be my hips that are the issue. Not getting much worse and not getting much better.
I had a complicated issue with injury's but now we are getting down to the root cause. It has been hard in all directions but I am willing to give surgery a go if it is my only option. I am due to see Mr Blackley couple of weeks. I would appreciate some replies. Thanks Karlos.

Thanks, Simple I had a back injury similar time, Docs said I had nerve damage and would never walk again, been able to ride Rotorua to Taupo 100km with hips strapped up in 2010 to prove I was semi ok and have been able to run strapped up 5.30 minute Km's bit slow for me but ,again to show I would like some help,  it causes me lots of issues which I did not know about and are never the same, people have been unable to help to help at this point until I visited this site, and asked if it could be my hips? Thanks for your help, cheers

Hi Karlos

Welcome to Hip Talk.  I have several stories from Dr. Blackley patients here including Kiwi's:

Karlos, welcome... you'll see a lot of stories here of the struggle to be diagnosed properly, to be heard. I know Simon (Kiwi) is a Dr. Blackley patient who lately was treated, is very helpful here.

Good on you to take the initiative the way you have. Dr. Blackley I'm sure will check you out and figure out the best next steps. If you want more than one opinion, you can also send your XRays and information to some of the surgeons that Pat has listed on here who will give their opinions free of charge - they are some of the best in the world at this type of procedure.

Welcome, we know how you feel, this is how you go forward.

Kiwi?  where are you?  I think he stepped out for a bit, probably playing squash.   Saw a post from him a couple days ago.

It sounds like Dr Blackley is pretty experienced.  I was reading up on him the other day and Kiwi has been real happy with him.

Reading your story about crutches and 5 years and not really changing one way or the other.  That's tough.  I feel for you.  I think you're taking the right steps by seeing a good ortho srugeon.  Definetely get your x-rays.  Good luck and welcome.

Thanks Pat and all. I will check out the Dr Clive Dreyer and track him down. Sounds like he is down south no problem.
He is now pretty much my age but both my hips are not good now, after being hobbling for so long. Was the right first and just recently now its my left as I have been weight bearing on this now close to 6 years on my left. Its a real long story and I have been ever so patient and been and seen so many people it really has been a journey I would never want to repeat. But it could be worse I suppose. I am hoping Mr Blackley will show me the light at the end of the tunnel I have no other option really. Was a full on active bloke, who worked hard and had lots of interests - young family I suppose never thought this would happen. Been though all sorts of bad stuff not much good stuff recently but time is ticking past. I need some help and have for the last 5 + years (injury Feb 2007).
I thank you for this site and hope I can get better one day as I have a lot of unfinished stuff I would like to do.
I really need to take it easier if I get sorted.
I look forward to keeping in contact and letting people know what, or if I can get some help, and the stages after that.

Thanks for the support as I have been alone a long time with this thing.

Cheers Karl - Karlos

Hi Karl

I am a very very happy camper having had a simultaneous bilateral BHR nearly 5 years ago with Hugh Blackley.
I can not speak more highly of him in his professional capacity....he turned me around from being more or less a cripple to being a very normal outdoorsy type, who regularly hunts, fishes, kayaks, hikes, walks and mountain bikes all totally pain free.
I'd be happy to give more details if you need...am in the BOP.

This forum is incredible. I've said it so many times that if it wasn't for this place, I would never have had my surgery and regained my life.

Thanks all for your support. Have spoken to Simon, great to here some positive news about Hip resurfacing, he quoted some real good statistics. Have been talking to my dad about things and he is a great logic thinker says it sounds good and practical. So just really have to see what Mr Blackey says.  Thanks Gavin for your comments I think I will make a trip over and see you if you don't mind if Mr Blackley confirms how and when? . I had finished building a plane 5 years ago when this all happened and are just about ready to have my dad test fly it. I have not been able to do my Private Pilots License yet as I have been in so much pain just been too hard to concentrate on the exams. It (the plane) would have normally taken me 5 months to do it but it has been a mission the condition I am in. I am pleased I am progressing on something as it is all about all I have left. Quite an amazing bloke my dad with his health at 74, still has a full plane Private Pilots license unheard of. He still carries out his own deer, skis, rides a bike for exersize. I must try to look up how to put pictures on this site.  Thanks all again and I will keep in touch appointment is 14th. Cheers Karl - Karlos

Hi Karlos

I've had both a resurfacing and a THR. It's early days yet with my THR, which looks promising but hand on heart? I'd pursue the resurfacing in your situation, you keep more bone, they last longer and the BHR is a proven device which, if installed by a reputable surgeon with good numbers, seems to be miraculous for returning you to your life.

The key is good surgeon and then trust. There are always failure rates but minimise the risk for that by surgeon choice and following the recovery protocol even when you feel invincible post op.  you'll be fine! Keep posting, we want to know how you are getting on!  Good luck on 14th.

Excellent to hear you got in touch with Kiwi (playing squash, funny, I just figured that's what you were up to).

Good Luck on the appointment, Karlos.  Remember to write down a bunch of questions ahead of time.
