Hi

Does anyone know or have any experience with Dr. Ihekweazu?  I had a consult with him and he seems great (trained under Dr. Su) but only does 4-5 hip resurfacings per month.  He is close by for surgery and I am debating going with him or Dr. Brooks.

Thank you

Hey JMS7.

Ask him how many, total, he has done.  Experience is THE MOST important determiner of good outcomes, and 4-5 per month would be VERY troubling to me personally.

I'm a big fan of Dr. Gross in South Carolina, which is maybe even a bit closer than Cleveland, but Dr. Brooks is great, too.  I would choose the doctor who specialized in resurfacing, not the doctor who "also does them".

Update 11 months post hip resurfacing surgery with Dr. Ihekweazu (trained by Dr. Su) in Houston, TX.

I had no choice but to stay in Texas for my surgery because of insurance and Dr. Ihekweazu seemed like the best choice and the consultation went great.  It was definitely a tough couple of days post surgery and I tried to end the meds too early but things healed exceptionally well.  I did this surgery to continue training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and was able to begin training lightly around 3 months after surgery and close to normal at 5 months.  My range of motion is greater than prior to surgery and all of the daily pain and stiffness from before surgery is completely gone.  I train 3-4X a week now with no issues or soreness of any kind.  The surgery was an amazing success and I could not be happier.

I know I’m resurrecting an old topic but I think it’s important to share experiences with some of the lesser known Doctors.  I am two weeks post right BHR with Dr. Ihekweazu.  I shared some of the concerns about his experience, which at the time I chose him he and I estimated that he had done roughly 300 procedures.

I have had a great experience with Dr. Ihekweazu and the Tx Orthopedic Hospital in Houston.  I had a S&N BHR with a posterior approach. Spinal with general anesthesia.  I was using a walker for about 9 days, and have been using a single cane for the last 5.  Today I walked three miles (one mile each in three different sessions) and my joint is basically pain free.  I was off the opiates by day 5 and just using Tylenol as needed.

I’ve experienced many of the little muscle related things that others have said on here, but overall I’m extremely pleased with my result and am confident I’ll get to where my end goal is (running and soccer with my kids) some day.

I am planning on getting my left done by Dr. Ihekweazu this summer.  I felt it was important to give an experience with a lesser discussed, but I believe high quality surgeon in a major metro area.

Thank you for sharing your experience! Reviving this thread as I'm up the road from ya'll in Austin and am actively researching relatively nearby options for resurfacing. Dr Ihekweazu is an ortho I'm considering, he seems to be one of the few who does resurfacings in the state. Can I ask how your hips are doing now?

Thx!
Greg

I’m at 15 months on my right and 9 months on my left and I’m really happy with my recovery and progress.  I’ve had almost no complications and I would still recommend Dr. Ihekweazu highly.  I still have a long way to completely build my strength back (years of inactivity will do that to you) but my hips feel great and I’m very happy I had them done.

Please let me know if you have any questions on specifics with anything. Happy to share information though I don’t get on here as often as I used to.
