Kelly’s Bilateral Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Su 2013
April 13, 2013
I just am three days out of surgery for a bilateral with Dr Su. Can’t say enough good things about him or his staff. On my early pt jaunts (just got to crutches today) my right foot toes in some.
An additional comment. The Hospital for Special Surgeries is absolutely amazing.

I didn’t realize how much discomfort I was in for several years until I was without the pain from both hips. Of course there is the surgery pain but it is different. I had my surgery with Dr Su on April 12 and it is now the 21st. I Am home…just had my third night here. but even in the hospital (HSS) I was sleeping so much better. every night I wake from a solid sleep experience. Emotionally I have been on a high. whenever I begin to describe the people I have been around and the general experience I find myself welling with tears of thankfulness. It is all good I keep telling folks. From the entire staff (bottom up or top down) I have run across goodness of spirit. I believe a lot has to do with attitude. we all bring out of each other what we put in.

Recovery has been very good. I am looking forward to my return visit on May 8th for pictures. My legs swelled up like water balloons post op. I would put compression socks on in the morning and take them off at the end of the day.
Any time I was prone I elevated above my heart. he fluids went down pretty quickly. a couple days after the reduction of fluids I stopped the compression socks. that was several days ago. I still have soreness just above my knee towards the outside of the thigh. Pretty tender to the touch.

I have been walking and riding a trainer at the health club. I spend 45 minutes 3-5 times a week in a pool. I put on a waster flotation belt and walk back and forth high stepping, backwards/forwards, side step as far as is comfortable plus a touch and the side step weave to a degree. Then I grab a flotation noddle and do bike (cycling) exercises in deeper water. Frog kick but floating with my feet down and kicking in the same position. You can get a bit of a work out. But I am now feeling less dependent on the crutches and around the house don’t always use them. Great weather and I am thinking some light raking in the yard today (May 5th). Xrays this coming week and my month follow up. If it goes well I think I’ll be on my bike very soon. With a bilateral I plan on a total bike fit by a local PT who also rides and does fits.
Now my aging knee, that is close to bone on bone is calling out with the new alignment.
