Kevin’s Hip Resurfacing 2013
Kevin’s Hip Resurfacing 2013
December 21, 2013
I have just had my BHR done 7 days ago. I have swelling from the hip down to my foot. Is anyone else experiencing the same issue.
Also I find when I sit in a chair or lie down I don’t have many pain issues but as soon as I stand , try and walk and do exercise I find a real tightening in the front groin area and it feels like someone is ripping the muscle. Not very pleasant. I was hoping the pain would have eased a little more at this point. It is also very tight around the incision area and still quite swollen.

I am now at 12 days Post Op. I am finding it difficult to find a chair that I can sit in that is comfortable and when I get up and stand after sitting for more than 10 minutes my leg tightens so much and is still quite painful. The swelling is still there. Icing does not seem to help either that issue or the pain.
Yesterday I went off my meds for the day and also had a couple of beers with Christmas lunch. Not a good idea on both accounts. I ended up in pain until I popped some Endone late that night. I will stay away now from alcohol (gees and new years eve is upon us) until I am further down the track.
Sleeping is still very erratic only getting blocks of 2 hours at a time. I really hate sleeping on my back. Just cant seem to get comfortable.
I have been wearing both TEDS and Skins to try and help the swelling but having both on is driving me crazy, so I am opting to just wear the skins and see how it goes.

Well 2 weeks in as well yesterday and the swelling has gone down due to elevating my leg every 4 hours for 30 minutes. I am also walking on sticks which I have been doing since leaving hospital.
The TEDS I am wearing are just to prevent Blood Clots…..
The SKINS which I referred to in an earlier post are Compressions Tights similar to what you would wear in the gym on road bike cycling. They go from the ankle to the waist and are designed to help with support of the leg muscles. You can also use them in lieu of the TEDS.
I am alternating both at the moment depending on how hot it is. We have a 38C day coming tomorrow so will wear the TEDS.
So, progress looks like happening thankfully. As far as my Meds, I am only taking Endone X 1 twice a day now for pain and Pandol Osteo 2 tabs 3 times a day along with 1 X Iron tablet and 1 X Blood thinner tab.
Bring on the recovery.
I am now walking 200 metres 3 times a day with sticks.
I must say that it has been so very helpful hearing from everyone on the various topics. It is a great support knowing we are not alone out there.
I would also like to thank the convenor Patricia Walter for running these forums……keep up the great work we all appreciate it.

Went for my first drive today to the shopping centre. No problems driving just slow getting in and out of the car. I parked next to a car with plenty of space to open my door to swing my legs out but when I got back to the car that car had gone and another parked there but very close to my door. It took my 5 minutes to manaouvre myself into the drivers seat grrrrr. Another lesson learned on were you should park, maybe next to a column next time.

I am at 3 1/2 weeks and have started driving again as of yesterday and have been in and out of the car a number of times. It is difficult to swivel legs into drivers seat but I went slowly and it went ok, I just had to support the leg with my hands. Just make sure when you go park somewhere you have plenty of room to open the door to swing your legs out. See my other post on “Swollen”. I am down to one crutch now and is OK but am starting to here some clicking noise, which is supposed to be normal.

My surgeon in Brisbane recommends TEDS or SKINS (surgical tights) for a period 4-6 weeks and also to take Xarelto until I run out of the script aprox 5 weeks for the blood clotting.
I am at 4 weeks today (62 years old) and getting stronger daily. I have stepped my exercise program to be doing 10 different exercises X 15 reps 3 times a day and now walking 30 mins 3 times daily. I still have a lot of stiffness where the surgery was and some in my groin but is bearable.
I have gone of Panadol Osteo and Tramdol and am just taking Ferro Grad C ( iron tablets and xarelto). When I wake up at night and am pain I may pop a Pandine Forte.

This is my second HR and this one sees to be taking much longer to recover. AT 4 weeks the 1st op I was off 2 crutches. This time I am at 5 weeks and still using one with no sign of throwing it away. I still have lots of stiffness and bumps around the surgery site. I am back driving and doing general stuff but my body is saying take it easy.

It has been over 5 weeks now and I am still on one crutch. I feel like I still cant put my weight on the operated leg and take those first few steps without crutches.
