Larry’s Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Gross 2012
April 4, 2012
Dr. Gross and team resurfaced my left hip one ago today and until now my recovery has seemed to be right on track. I quit the pain meds yesterday and walked some using the cane today. Tonight my leg is swollen down to the ankle and sore and achy.

I was breezing along 8 days out from having my left hip resurfaced by Dr. Gross on 3/28. I posted Wednesday night that my leg was a little sore and swollen. The next morning, day 9, I was sitting at my desk getting ready to try do some work and the muscles in my butt/hip spasmed like nothing I’ve ever felt before…literally brought tears to my eyes! I was able to get prone and eventually they prescribed some Flexeril. Between that and getting back on the Nucynta I was a little better by evening.

Almost three weeks out and still sleeping only on my back. I can lie on my non operated side for a few minutes with pillows between my legs, not even close to being able to lie on the operated side. Also still using two crutches for any significant walk, cane for short distances around the house. I was getting frustrated but after reading lots of posts here I realize we’re all unique and recover at our own pace.

Closing in on week 5 now an I’m back on track and doing great. Still using one crutch outside of the house but close to tossing that aside

I’m 6 weeks post op from a left hip resurfacing and the operated hip is doing fine. In the last week my “good” hip has started to hurt, to the point that it’s much more painful when I’m walking than the one that I had resurfaced. Over the years I’ve had problems with the good hip and in fact Dr. Gross said he thought he saw a torn labrum on the side we were not operating on when he looked at the original films. I’m hoping that this is a short term problem caused by overuse doing the recovery period

I’m about to hit the eight week mark and for the past week have increased the walking some, (up to for miles or so a day, split between morning and afternoon walks) had a couple of sessions on the elliptical trainer, and continued swimming. Just last two days my hip seems more sore than it had been with a couple of fairly sharp pains and a general swelling and achy feeling. Dr.’s office says I probably just overdid it on the exercise.

I’m about 10 weeks postop from Dr. Gross. I was very worried going into my six week checkup and was convinced that I had somehow damaged the device for the tissue surrounding it. I read posts from people who had very little pain from 2 to 3 weeks on but that just wasn’t the case for me.
I’m still experiencing moderate pain, which I attribute to pushing a little harder than advised on the exercise (all within Dr. Gross’ guidelines, no running, just exercise bike and elliptical trainer, along with swimming). The phase 2 exercises that you’ll start after you get a clean bill of health at the six-week mark will help a lot.

After months of great progress I’m now exactly one year post resurfacing. I’ve been snow skiing, biking and done a little bit of jogging. I started to notice some pain, just an ache, in my hip about a month ago. If I tried to jog I could go a mile or so before having to stop and walk, then I could alternate walking and jogging but kept running into pain. Now the hip has a mild ache and tightness, maybe 2 on a scale of 1-10, and a slight tingle. no serious pain but feels like I’m moving backward.

It appears I have a small stress fracture. I am over year out from HR with Dr.Gross. I kept thinking it was a muscle issue. Last week my leg started swelling and I was in major pain. so I went to the emergency room. It barely shows on the Xray.
Sent all information and CD to Dr.Gross. I am on crutches since Friday, seems to be getting better.
Now I am trying to figure out how this happened. From the images the components seem to be in the same angles as last year. I am sure Dr.Gross will compare all the images tomorrow.
I ramped up my routine in Feb and March. I was doing a lot of one legged balancing plus side planks daily. I remember before the pain started my side plank was getting weaker on the HR side. I am not overweight but I was reading standing on one leg transmits four times your body weight on the hip joint that is being utilized.
Hopefully I just stressed the femoral neck, lets see.

Yeah one month on crutches seemed to have did the trick. Started walking over the weekend. Feeling good. Another plus, being non weight bearing, my psoas tendonitis is gone. Feel residual muscle weakness but that is to be expected
Now I just have to take it easy and not over do stuff.

I have been dealing with PSOAS tendonitis on and off since my first scope in Jan-2011. I had hip HR with Dr. Gross April 2016.
Well every time I ramp up activities in comes back with a vengance. I have tried PT, ART, etc . My joint and range are great on the HR hip. Unfornately the PSOAS tendonitis locks up your complete hip and I am a back to square one after any excersise. Here are my 3 options I believe.
— multiple cortisone shots in PSOAS/bursa
— PSOAS tendonitis lengthening not keen on this as I have heard mixed results.
— try to visit a new Surgeon group and get there option.
Going on 7 years is way too long I am at my wits end.
