April 16, 2009 I am just over 2 weeks post op from second half of Bilateral. The first week was definitely a challenge. I took the pain pills before I felt I needed them and that worked great, not much pain to deal with. I was a little unprepared for how useless my legs would be, a good deal of swelling even with the ice machine. I guess the big … Read the rest
March 29, 2008 I am just 3 weeks post op of having my right hip resurfaced by Dr. Gross in Columbia, SC. I don’t have any nightmare stories nor have any bad press for Dr. Gross’s procedure. Actually my experience has been very good and am recovering rapidly.
I am already walking unassisted around my house with little limp, mainly out of fear, though I still use the cane when … Read the rest
June 11, 2008 I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis at 28. I had uncemented resurfacing by Dr. Gross in May at the age of 35.
I had hip resurfacing with Dr. Gross on May 14. I’m 4 weeks post op today. I have been very happy with Dr. Gross. I was a little worried about hip resurfacing since it is a newer surgery. After talking to Dr. Gross, there was no … Read the rest
January 31, 2012 I am walking over 3 miles per day with my cane at 3 1/2 weeks post-op, feeling sore and my mind is running. I also don’t like meds. I am a Dr. Gross patient.
February 11, 2012 I am doing stretches where I let gravity be my “force.” I was severely limited in my ROM prior to surgery, so the muscles and tendons want to spasm now … Read the rest
Update May 24, 2016
I have taught and coached high level skiing for 46 years, the past 8 years on my resurfaced hip. Dr Gross encouraged me to ski on it, and I started skiing at six months post surgery. I have heard of people rarely having trouble with THRs when skiing; dislocations, femoral fractures. I have many friends including instructors, ski patrollers, and students who ski with THRs, and … Read the rest
February 17, 2010 Dr. Della Valle resurfaced my right hip on 12/18/09. Tomorrow will be 2 months and I feel great. I can put my socks on, tie my shoes and even clip my toe nails. I would think he has way more than 100 by now as he is in great demand. I had to wait 6 weeks to see him and another 2 months for the surgery. He … Read the rest
2004 Resurfacing by Dr. De Smet of Belgium. I have played hockey 2 days a week since, snow boarding, running and still going strong. Guess I wore out the natural one.
I had a BHR in 2004 in Belgium and after numerous appeals BC picked up the tab. They were jerks until after numerous study submissions and the fact that I must have hit a reasonable Doctor from BC who … Read the rest

My Rt. hip was resurfaced by Dr. De Smet in Oct 2004 and still feels like new. I’ve had no problems in the almost ten years since surgery. My total experience with Dr. De Smet was wonderful; and if my other hip ever needs surgery I’ll return to him in a heartbeat.
I’ve referred several friends to your excellent website.

August 13, 2016 Update
I’m 4-and-a-half years out on my revision to THR (a la De Smet) and going strong. I would also say that the two year mark was an important dividing line in my recovery from THR surgery. After that point I never had to worry again about overexerting myself. In terms of performance, I see very little real difference between the THR and the HR. Maybe in … Read the rest
October 3, 2012 I travelled from Jordan and had my surgery yesterday (RH- conserve +)
Per-op (X-rays, blood test and EKG etc) was done in Dr de Smets Anca Clinic on Monday. I then checked in Jan Palfijn Hospital. I recommend that you make sure in which room you are (single double four people) well before your check-in.
Surgery on Tuesday morning went very well (I fully trusted Dr de … Read the rest
August 8, 2012 I am from Canada too and I just had a bilateral HR, july 3 rd with Dr Koen De Smet in Belgium. I am very happy with the outcome though obviously still in recovery mode(5 weeks ). It is easy to get to Brussels and then Ghent from Montreal as AC flies non stop there. I also checked out the British drs (Mcminn, Treacy). What I liked … Read the rest
August 20, 2010 I was sent unceremoniously to the reception Tuesday morning at 7.00 and told “ticket number 20.” Administration was simple but they said I had been booked a room for two but they have none, so I will be in a room for four. I was sent to the room but spent the next two hours walking, as I knew that would be the last for a while.… Read the rest
