Peter’s Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Young 2013
Peter’s Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Young 2013
May 11, 2013
At 45, I had a hip arthroscopy performed in Hamilton by Dr. Olufemi Ayeni in June 2011.
If I knew what I know now, I would have had the resurfacing back then instead of the arthoscopy –which based on my age and OA did not work nor does it usually work. That surgery accelerated the need for resurfacing and the recovery is slower than the resurfacing operation. So I looked around Ontario where I found out there are only a handful of surgeons that perform resurfacing. I just had my left hip resurfaced with a 52mm Biomet prosthetic on May 1st, 2013 by Dr. Young. I’m 10 days out and on crutches– but healing just fine. The wait time is quite horrific in Ontario at 9 months to a year (I am still waiting in line without a date from Dr. Emil Schemitsch–my pre-appointment was last May). Dr. Young has a ton of experience with resurfacings and has incredible bedside manner. She is a 10 out of 10 surgeon. She will be doing my other hip next January.

Just an update to my previous post regarding Dr. Christine Young.
Released on the Saturday following my surgery on Wednesday (3 days post op)
Week 1 – 2 – Used two crutches. I was very sore. Could only sleep on back. Took percocet for pain management.
Weeks 3 – 4 – Paired down to one crutch. Still sore and on percocet for pain management.
Still couldn’t balance on my operated leg. Still couldn’t raise my operated leg while lying on my back.
Weeks 5 – 8 – Used a cane. Tylenol 3s for pain
Did physiotherapy (PT) once daily for five weeks
Saw a physiotherapist weekly for five weeks
Met with the Doc at one month and will see her again at 2.5 months
I am exactly 8 weeks post op. I am still sore most days. I didn’t feel things getting better until week 5. I am still working on my gait. I feel like I am progressing very well.
Dr. Young did a great job.
