15 days post op
Here is the update post op BHR (left side):
1. 3 nights in the hospital…up the 2nd day and able to walk the
halls using a walker. Climbed stairs the 2nd day.
2. Day 3 went home, began in home therapy on day 4. Able to complete
all exercises without any pain.
3. Able to walk using a cane on day 5.
4. Day 7 was able to drive my car… only went about 5 miles
though…went to dinner with some business associates that were in
town. Drank good wine and had some excellent sea bass. Was tired when
I arrived home at 11 pm.
5. Day 9, completed 3rd in home therapy session…graduated to several
advanced exercises
6. day 10, walked about 1/2 mile.
7. Day 11, went to park, and walked 1.25 miles – carried cane and used
it going down hill.
8. Day 13, drove to the airport, walked about 1/2 mile with bags.
Traveled across the US to CA. Used 1/2 of a pain pill for seating comfort.
9. Day 14, went to meeting and tour of 2 vineyards in Napa. Was on my
feet for about 3 hours touring and sampling various wines (lots of
walking with stairs), then went to dinner. Went to bed about 10 pm. I
climbed up and down many sets of stairs without incident.
10. Day 15, traveled back to the east coast without incident.
11. Day 16, graduated to outside therapy beginning on day 20…
I don’t believe that I would have anywhere near the same results if I
had a THR. I have never experienced any pain through this whole
procedure and recovery period.

Dr. Stephen Smith
Atlanta, GA BHR 2/27/07
PS. Also, Dr. Smith is excellent!!!…he also likes to use glue vs.
staples…first post op visit to his office is in 4 weeks…Prior to
being trained on BHR, Dr. Smith was and still is considered the best
THR MD in Atlanta….Obviously, he is also excellent with BHR.
2 Year Update 2/27/09 I have absolutely no problems or pain whatsoever. I can walk 8-10 miles on the beach (sand) with 10lb. ankle weights. Playing golf, and can also run again. I am only doing light jogging though vs. the 5-6 mile workouts from the past. Continue to have excellent flexibility. The greatest challenge post op was putting on/off socks. No problem with this task today. The only recent problem was I developed plantar fasciitis in my left heel. I have had the problem for about 10 months, but I am beginning to recover (complete) after visiting the podiatrist. I don’t know if PF was linked to BHR or not. I think it’s important to stretch all your leg muscles in both legs every day (post op), as soon as you are cleared by the doctor. Sam Russell |
