4 YEAR UPDATE - bilateral hip resurfacing with Dr. Gross. How time flies!
The short update is that everything is going well. I run, I swim, I dance, I climb, I walk, I do everything I want to do. Other body parts are wearing out and giving me trouble, but not my hips. The biggest roadblock to my improving continues to be time to train. Because I feel so good, I am out there working, traveling, studying, living a rich and full life.
The longer update is that I ran three half marathons last year and became a regular at a Boot Camp
10 YEAR UPDATE - Last Saturday I was able to climb to the summit of Mt Elbert, the highest peak in Colorado at 14,439 feet. I have been working up to this challenge for about a year, but had failed in my two previous attempts. The ascent and descent took almost eight hours. I’m pretty slow. I still find it hard to believe that at 62 years old, my Birmingham Hips were able to get me to the summit.
11 YEAR UPDATE - I am 11 years 2 days post op hip resurfacing today with Dr. Gross. I received an uncemented biomet hip resurfacing replacement that Dr. Gross designed himself, at the time uncemented was fairly new but it made sense to me. The surgery was pretty easy, I was up and walking that morning, 6 weeks post op I played 18 holes of golf with my buddies.
If you’re in pain, don’t wait, it was one of my best decisions although I waited too long.
16 YEAR UPDATE - Back in the day (2002), when I was doing my research, someone who was a friend of a technical employee at the manufacturer of the BHR, said Dr. DeSmet was known to have the best hands in the business. Between my husband and I we have tested the premise four times and have followed the progress of many others…all are delighted years later. Wonderful hands and a wonderful caring man...
15 YEAR UPDATE - Dr. Gross resurfaced my left hip in 2004. That’s 15 years! So far, so good. I had my right hip resurfaced at the University of KY in 2010. That one, too, is good. I am soon to be 71 years old and though other things ache, my hips do not. So glad I made the hip resurfacing choice. It took only a year (or so) to get back into decent shape.
20 YEAR UPDATE - Best thing I have ever done! Got my left hip resurfacing with Mr McMinn in 1999 and 20 years later it’s still great. I’m an active person doing cycling, walking, swimming, gym and judo. A normal hip replacement would have probably been revised 20 years ago! Right hip resurfacing done in 2014 and perfect and still very active at nearly 67.
13 YEAR UPDATE - My BHR Birmingham Hip Resurfacing has been doing a great job for 13 years and has never caused me any problems. I had my hip resurfacing with Dr. De Smet on March 15, 2006 in Belgium.
I look forward to many more years with my BHR and wish the same for others.
I started the Surface Hippy website to help people learn about the wonderful results people have had with hip resurfacing.
12 YEAR UPDATE - I guess you can tell I am very happy with my life. I doubt I would have been able to be this way if I didn’t stumble upon your website. For that I am grateful to you forever. It was there that I received the knowledge, encouragement, and courage to move forward with a very controversial BHR surgery. I can only imagine how many people like me you and your very unbiased site has helped. For that THANK YOU!
15 UPDATE - I had my BHR -Â Birmingham Hip Resurfacing at the age of 15 due to perthes disease. It has been absolutely fantastic since I have had it. Mr Treacy was my surgeon. I think this year will be a milestone, I will have lived longer with a BHR in my right hip than a normal one!
I have always been active, going to the gym, hiking, cycling (long distances), swimming.
9 YEAR UPDATE - my left hip resurfacing will be 9 years young! It continues to perform superbly - so huge thanks as always to Pat and many others who guided and supported me 9 years ago.
I celebrated my 6 year anniversary with a 20k bike ride followed by a 2k swim- rainy day. At my 4 year mark had my check up. X-rays great - no change - spot on 40 degrees. Bloods - Chromium 1.4 Cobalt 1.2
10 YEAR UPDATE - Last week was the 10 year anniversary on my left hip, and this week I hit the 2 month mark on the right. I am a sports instructor year round, teaching high level skiing all day every day all winter, and teaching windsurfing during the summers, with lots of surfing and tennis thrown in.My hip from 10 years ago has worked out great.
20 YEAR UPDATE - Mr McMinn replaced my right hip with a BHR twenty years ago (followed by another on the left over six years ago).
It has felt exactly like a natural, healthy hip throughout all that time and I am still as active as I want to be, including tennis a couple of times a week, cycling, motorcycling etc.
I regard myself as very fortunate that this surgery came along just when I needed it.
