I had my left hip resurfaced by Dr. Rector on July 24, 2018. I am from San Diego and a lifelong surfer, tennis player, and yoga enthusiast. I first started to experience severe hip pain back in 2011. By the end of 2017 I could barely walk a half mile or sit on my surfboard while waiting for a wave to catch. The pain had become impossible to tolerate for my active lifestyle.

I hung around the surface hippy site for a few years but when the notes became so negative I had to back off. It wasn’t syncing with what was going on in my life post-surgery. September 13, 2018 – I’m happy to report that I LOVE my new hip. I had follow-up xrays which shoed everything looking good, and my non-op hip in perfect shape, as well.
Last year I decided to try racing (I’ve been rowing for 9 years, but not racing, and the pain was unbearable by the end). I’m happy to report that at the end of this month I am going to FISA Worlds in Florida to race SIX times in three days. Kind of crazy.
I still have trouble with my glute medius, which has been down and out for over a decade, but with PT, strength training, and dry needling, it’s coming back. That piece just takes time.

I was 48 when I received the very surprising diagnosis of arthritis in my left hip. My pain wasn’t that bad at the time so I really didn’t think it was as bad as they said. The first words I heard after my initial X-Ray were “You need a Total Hip Replacement! I was stunned. I thought I had a strained tendon or a torn labrum, arthritis wasn’t even on my radar. I have compiled video clips in chronological order, over a period of 6 months, from the day of surgery, my recovery, rehab and physical therapy activities, to my return to kiteboarding. I had severe arthritis in my left hip. I chose to have Hip Resurfacing over Total Hip Replacement so I could return to a high level of activity as opposed to the limited activity I would have had with Total Hip Replacement. Just had bilateral resurfacing with Dr. Su. I too was forced out of the butterfly after about 40 years playing, and became more of a Phil Esposito. I went in for surgery on a Thursday came out Saturday and was hobbling around my house on Sunday without my crutches. I’m 50 and the Same basic size as you. You should consider bilateral. I will post as I get deeper into the recovery and hit some milestones, for now totally pumped with where I am 3 days after surgery.

April 29, 2017 – This thread is to update my progress after five years on my second hip. I am now going on 71 years and will be taking the National Ski Patrol classes this summer and plan to be an active Patroller this winter at the ski areas in the Midwest that are near me. I have enjoyed cross country ski races of 25K, biking of over 100K in a day and also downhill skiing through the trees. January 29, 2017 I am about 8 ½ years out at this point. I also am very happy with my resurfaced hip from Dr Gross. At 65 I am still skiing hard 6 to 8 hours every day during the winters, and surfing, tennis, and windsurfing every day during the summers.
Scuba diving, tai chi, road biking, and downhill skiing are all activities that he is back out enjoying pain-free.
“Since undertaking my hip resurfacing surgery, I have participated in more than 200 scuba dives in all kinds of conditions and locations, and attained a PADI Divemaster rating through extensive training and testing.

I have been a less frequent visitor to this site – mostly because my hip is no longer a problem and I am busy enjoying life!
