I have had a fairly active life to a point – running, hiking, biking, and a lot of squash. In the fall of 2009 I started getting aches and pains around my right hip. Matters continued to degrade and I stopped playing squash in Nov 2010. I self-diagnosed as iliopsoas tendonitis and pursued some sports therapy and chiropractic. Neither produced results and by Apr 2013 I could barely walk 50 yards without significant pain. I was recommended to a PT and went as I was running out of options. This turned out very well as AG helped me restore most functionality within a month. I was able to do a lot more again but it did hurt and range of motion was getting worse – I knew what the real condition was and the only way to treat it. My squash colleague MF and I had been trading notes … Read the rest

Day Before Surgery
I had a steak dinner for my last supper before surgery, along with 2 beers. Possibly against doctors orders, but oh well. I had to wake at 4 a.m. to go to the hospital so I didn’t sleep well of course. I found out through my experience that the surgery unit at Highland Hospital in Rochester, NY is top notch with a great staff. Same can be said for the staff during my recovery at the hospital during my 3 day stay (3 days/2 nights, including day of surgery)
Day of Surgery
I was scheduled first in line, 7:30 a.m. and was completely knocked out during the procedure. My anesthesia was a combination of a spinal anesthesia, light general anesthesia, and a sedative, which worked great for me. I awoke at 9:30 in recovery in substantial pain, and asked … Read the rest

Two days after my surgery I was walking more briskly than I expected with a wheeled walker in the hospital. I think I pushed the envelope a little after I was released on July 17th. My cell phone ‘drowned’ in some water on my hospital tray while I was there. So, after I went home for a few hours I was off to Verizon on crutches to get a phone, with help of course. Then a trip to the grocery store before back home to crash. Two days later I was cruising around town with a friend trying to replace a washing machine that died when I got home. So, maybe a little too much too soon.
Right now I’m home managing alone and moving only when necessary, on one crutch. Still having some discomfort sleeping but visiting nurse … Read the rest

This week marks the 2 year anniversary of my new hip.
This web site was a huge comfort and source of info as I prepared for surgery and I always intended to come back and share my story but somehow time has slipped by and I never did. It’s high time!
I had a Birmingham hip resurfacing done by Dr. Christopher Drinkwater at Highland Hospital in Rochester, NY in Dec. 2010.
I had suffered with arthritis pain in my hip for 3-4 years prior to surgery. I was 46 years old when I had my hip done and I had been a competitive athlete since my teen years (running, Ultimate frisbee, biking, snowboarding, racquetball, volleyball). I continued to do all my various sports despite the arthritis pain (which usually didn’t bother me DURING the activity, only afterwards) but my wife … Read the rest

Doug Hendee was highly active—playing lacrosse, running triathlons and leading exercise classes. But arthritis threatened to take away all the things he loved.
August 30, 2010 I’m 54, sons 12 and 16 in hockey and I want to skate again with them. Heck, I want to be able to tie my own shoes again! After research here, I had the right hip resurfaced BHR in Rochester NY by Dr. Drinkwater on 6/23. Left one coming up 10/27, can’t wait. Surgery took 1 hr 20 mins. In on Wednesday, home on Saturday.
October 14, 2010] For my right hip resurface in June I had a spinal below and general up top, a shot of versed just before all this. The tops of my thighs were very numb for 2 months, worse on the left (unoperated). In the last month or so it has subsided to about 5% left leg, 2% right leg. I had awful shooting and burning pain in my left hip area for several weeks after the surgery. Oxy helped a little … Read the rest
