Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on March 5, 2020 by Patricia WalterMarch 9, 2020

March 7, 2020 Two Year Anniversary

It’s been a while since I’ve visited this forum. Happy to report that I now spend very little time thinking about my hip. Last week I had my 2 year checkup for a left hip resurfacing I had done with Dr. Peter Brookes of the Cleveland Clinic. X-Rays looked good. I wasn’t expecting any problems as the hip has felt wonderful. No pain. Lot’s of flexibility. Very stable. I’ve resumed a normal life being as active as I want to be. I’m back to playing golf, and have been able to run with my son as he trains for his track season. I am very happy with my decision and am grateful for the skill of my surgeon that … Read the rest

Bottom Line Up Front – BHR has allowed me to have my life back.  I’m a 7 Year BHR Alumni of the BHR Club (Dr. Brooks, Cleveland Clinic) and want to give you, those who are considering or are already soldiering through the initial stages of post surgery/PT, confirmation that it is all worth the struggle.

First, as a baseline, I’m a 56 year old male, in the military, reserves now, first diagnosed with osteoarthritis in both hips when I was 40. I’m married to an awesome woman, and father to a fine son who is also a pain in the ass. My family and my service are numbers 1 and 2 of why I went forward with hip resurfacing. … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on August 8, 2018 by Patricia WalterAugust 29, 2018

On Sunday, June 4th, I accomplished a goal that I’ve been preparing for over a year. I successfully completed my first Tough Mudder. I have been physically, mentally and spiritually transformed in the last 12+ months. From not even being able to simply run…to now after my hip resurfacing leaping, jumping, running and climbing PAIN FREE !

Thankful to friends and family who have encouraged and applauded my hip resurfacing through it all! Your energy sustained me.

I had my right hip resurfacing in February of 2016 by Dr. Brooks and his team at the Cleveland Clinic. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life! It changed my life in so many ways!

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on December 20, 2017 by Patricia WalterJanuary 1, 2018

December 13, 2017

When I first learned I needed a hip replacement I was 46.  I thought I was too young and tried waiting it out. I started looking for alternatives other than a full hip replacement.  My journey took me to first getting a cortisone injection. This did nothing for me other than have the experience of getting an injection in my groin. Next I started doing Bikram yoga to try and gain flexibility in all my joints and hopefully relieve some of the discomfort.  This helped me gain some flexibility or not lose any more, but this did not get rid of any pain.  I also tried a chiropractor do see if my alignment was causing any/some of this issue.  No change.  My … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on September 19, 2017 by Patricia WalterSeptember 29, 2017

In July of 2006, a month before my wedding and in the first year of my thirties, I thought I pulled a muscle in my thigh. I let it drag on for about six months, continuing my usual recreational activities of golf, softball, and ice hockey. Finally in January of 2007 my wife forced me to see a doctor as my pain had progressed to significant locking in my hip, shooting pain down my leg and an all encompassing discomfort with all activities and sleep.

This is when I learned, at age 31, I had no cartilage in my right hip and was down to bone on bone. It was a shocking finding to me and my doctor. I had no prior history of hip … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on September 6, 2017 by Patricia WalterOctober 22, 2017

August 11, 2014

Had a BHR on my left hip last Sept 20. I had had arthritis from a previous hip fracture accompanied by severe IT/knee pain. Post-procedure, everything had been going extremely well–I was following the fairly conservative recovery program prescribed by my doctor (no lifting or weight training, no high impact for a year post surgery) and I felt really perfect, but all of the sudden one day a couple weeks ago, it felt like I had some kind of insect bite on my front quadricep. I kept itching it and wondering how a mosquito bit me through my jeans. Then I realized what I was feeling was a tingling sensation which eventually became a greater tingling and numbness down the front of … Read the rest

Vince Obsitnik’s Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Brooks 2012 Running at 75

I should have written this article some time ago so others could know my experience with hip resurfacing.  Dr. Peter Brooks of the Cleveland Clinic performed the surgery to resurface my left hip on January 18, 2012 and I just recently had my five year checkup.  He used a S&N BHR.  At that time, I was 74 years old and had been running long distance since about age 55.  Between 1994 and 2008, I had run seven marathons, including Boston’s 100th running in 1996.  My last marathon was run in Kosice, Slovakia where I served as the U.S. Ambassador.

From 2009 to 2011, I developed pain in my left hip and was advised … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on March 18, 2017 by Patricia WalterMarch 18, 2017

March 13, 2017

To start off I am a 41 year very active male.  I was always active in sports growing up and played college and semi pro football.  I would workout 5-6 days a week, basketball twice a week, weightlifting, cardio, & crossfit, in addition to being active with my family.  I had never been seriously injured previously.  I am 6’1″ 235 and in very good shape.  One morning in late July I played basketball early morning with a group of guys and later that afternoon took some clients out to play golf and about half way through I could not turn on a golf ball.  I have pain in my groin and was certain I pulled something or it was a nerve.  From … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on February 23, 2017 by Patricia WalterFebruary 23, 2017

February 22, 2017

I underwent the BHR hip resurfacing procedure in January, 2007 at the age of 53.  I remember being a bit apprehensive at first.  I realized though that I had arrived at the crossroads in life where my arthritic hip was seriously compromising my quality of life.

With the personal & confident reassurance of Dr. Peter Brooks I made the decision to proceed and I have never looked back.  Next to the good Lord’s original work, Dr. Brooks’ resurfacing procedure has yielded excellent results.  This procedure restored the pain free use of my hip and my quality of life has been exceptionally improved.

I just concluded my ten year follow up and I am happy to report that all is well.  My daily

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on November 15, 2016 by Patricia WalterNovember 17, 2016

November 30, 2011

I am new here and scheduled for BHR with Dr. Brooks on December 20.  I’m also a marathon runner. I know Dr. Brooks says I shouldn’t run for a year, which pains me.

December 31, 2011

I had left BHR with Dr. Brooks on December 20. He said it was “perfect, textbook surgery” and I got out of the hospital a day earlier than I had planned.

But now I’m home and I’m depressed and freaking out. Can others share if they’ve felt this way?

I feel like I’m walking around on glass and am somewhat obsessed that one wrong step will cause a break of the femoral neck, leading to revision, etc. I KNOW rationally that it takes more than one … Read the rest

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on November 14, 2016 by Patricia WalterNovember 14, 2016

I was a little nervous leading up to the surgery.  Who wouldn’t be?  The anticipation of pain,  the anesthesia,  the inherent risk of surgery.   I watched every video and read every article on your site.

I made sure the house was in good shape.  I only have 3 steps getting in and all my important stuff is on the first floor.  I got all my pills and all that lined up,  got all my grocery’s bought and prepared for easy prepping.   Feeling prepared helped a lot leading in to Surgery day.

So the hospital called me Tuesday,  told me to be at the hospital on Wednesday at 8:30 am and surgery would be at 11:15am.  My girlfriend had to work so Mom drove me the … Read the rest

Quick Summary,  I can not be more happy with my decision to do this so far.  It’s incredible.  I put both my socks on before I went walking with no help.  Every day there is something else that makes this better.  If you’re in pain and not doing things in your life because of the pain don’t let the fear of this stop you.  It’s an incredible gift to yourself and Dr. Brooks and his staff are magicians!

Hip Resurfacing at Surface Hippy Posted on October 6, 2016 by Patricia WalterAugust 10, 2017

Read Dan’s Full Story Here

October 6, 2016 – 5 years yesterday on my left BHR, doing extremely well.  No issues with the implants, walk 20-25 miles/week motivated by keeping weight off to extend hip life, which has improved overall health measurably.  Walk at just under 4mph consistently on hilly terrain.  Managed to impact one of the devices really hard with the tip of shovel handle while cutting sod about a month ago (the more fortunate of 2 places to have impacted in the hip region and was concerned for a few days, but nothing came of it thankfully.

In terms of issues/observations:

I have had occasional severe muscle spams/cramps on the inside of each thigh, that started post op after the first hip, after … Read the rest
