Chuck Breazeale Bilateral Hip Resurfacing with Dr. Gross 2010/2011
My left hip socket was smashed up badly in a 1982 car wreck when I was 21 years old. At that time, I was told that a cemented replacement was the option and because hip transplants were not expected to last but a few years that the orthos did not suggest a replacement. In fact, hip fusion would be the only option if my injured hip was painful. Seemed best to wait things out in hopes of improved medical technology.
I toughed it out from 1982 until 2010. I had no range of motion at all in the injured hip, but not much pain. My wife encouraged me to use our gold-plated health insurance to get a replacement. I knew about minimally invasive surgery, and checked into hip replacements by browsing web sites. That’s when I came across occasional mentions of hip resurfacing. It sounded cutting-edge, but when I looked into this I found that resurfacing was actually established and successful.
I met with a local ortho who said that he had experience with resurfacing. He suggested a regular THA because of the extent of damage of the hip socket. I scheduled myself for a THA, and had to wait for a few weeks before surgery. That’s when I came across your web site! It changed everything about my thinking about my hip surgery! Based on your web site, I called Dr Gross and scheduled an appointment!
He said that the extent of the hip socket damage would make the surgery more complicated than about 90% of his cases, but he believed that hip resurfacing would be successful. He said that if surgery revealed that resurfacing was not viable then he would complete the surgery as a THA instead of resurfacing.
The surgery completed as a resurfacing, and since day #2 I have been living as if no surgery happened at all. No pain or anything else, and driving since day 2 after surgery. It has been very, very good! In 2011, the other hip was done and the results are as every bit as good.
