Gary Daun BMHR with Mr. McMinn 2007
I received a BMHR from Dr. McMinn in May of this year. The reason I went to him was for a couple of reasons: my hip had progressed to a point where DeSmet and a number of surgeons in the US did not feel totally confident they could do a resurf. And, even if they could, they would not be able to address the 1″ length discrepancy. My bad hip was about 1″ shorter than my good hip. So, why McMinn? Well, the big reason was that he had started doing a procedure called the BMHR (Birmingham Mid Head Resection), and was the only surgeon in the WORLD doing this procedure. Basically, this is a larger version of a BHR, and was developed for patients not suitable for a normal resurf – but it offers the same benefits of a BHR regarding activity after surgery. So, basically, my chance of getting a total hip was much lower, as the BMHR was a fall-back in case I was not suitable for a BHR, and, if a BMHR was necessary, it would actually allow for significant lengthening of my bad hip. Well, I’m glad I went to McMinn because, as it turned out, I was not suitable for a BHR. But the beauty of this was that, by having the BMHR, Dr. McMinn was able to lengthen my leg by a whole inch! It has since settled some, and feels as though I am still about a quarter inch short, but I’ll take it. I have never felt so level!!! Care was absolutely incredible. I have never experienced attention to detail as I did at Birmingham Nuffield. The nurses were great. Dr.. McMinn was great. I went alone, but he made me feel totally comfortable during our initial consult, which took place about an hour before being admitted to the hospital. It happened very fast, but he and Dr. Daniels were very calming .Dr. McMinn showed me exactly what he was going to do. Said it was not agimmee, but that is was a relatively short putt. It was at that point that I was positive I had made the right decision. In addition, the nursing staff (and physio) were fantastic. Very caring, and very responsive to my needs They made me feel as though I was their only patient. I am happy to say that I am doing great. Last year during Christmas shopping, I could last only about 15 minutes before I’d have to stop. After about an hour or so, I had to quit completely because my hip was on fire. This year, I walked and walked and walked…no pain! It was wonderful. I am doing my follow-up with Dr. Rogerson as I am from Wisconsin. He is great, and is considered the best in the state, and one of the best in the country. In fact, he was asked to speak at the annual conference in Orlando this past October, one in which Dr. McMinn also spoke. In our initial follow-up, Dr. Rogerson looked at before and after pictures, and was in awe at what Dr. McMinn was able to accomplish. He had never seen this surgery first hand, and was amazed. I have now seen Dr. Rogerson three times, and have been told that I am progressing wonderfully. Because of my leg lengthening, I’ve still got a ways to go regarding range of motion, but I feel twenty years younger. I would recommend Dr. McMinn with no second thoughts. A great man. a great surgeon. Good luck on your decision. Gary |
