Title: Ice Pack Recipe
Post by: mmckeone on October 02, 2009, 02:37:19 PM
I see many people talking about frozen peas for ice packs.  Having been a college athlete I have sprent many hours in th training room icing various injuries.  I don't remember who I got the recipe from but it works great.  You will need two gallon size ziplock bags, heavy duty or freezer bags work best.  Just pour one cup of rubbing alcohol and three cups of water into one of the bags and seal it put that bag inside the second bag and seal then place the bag in the freezer.  The alcohlol keeps the ice from freezing solid and it remains flexilble in the bags.  WARNING!!  THE ICE PACK IS COLDER THAN NORMAL ICE AND CAN FREEZE YOUR SKIN.  MAKE SURE THAT YOU USE A TOWEL OR CLOTH BETWEEN THE ICE PACK AND YOUR SKIN!!

This is a great recipe.  I used the icing machine that Dr Rector recommends, but I might use this for my husbands back.  Thanks :)

I did that after surgery and it works great.   I had to use 4 zip lock bags to keep all the moisture in though.  But, the half water, half alcohol worked very well.

Oooh I wonder where you can by rubbing alcohol?! Sounds like a great tip.

I have an ice pack that I bought from the chiropractors, but unfortunately it does freeze solid and I have to wait a little after taking it out of the freezer before I can use it!x

Any drug store can sell you alcohol.

I use our vacuum food sealer unit, I push the air out by hand then just seal the bag without vacuuming it.

Those bags make some long lasting cold for next to nothing $$$ wise.
