Title: Bad fall #3 hip still good to go
Post by: obxpelican on November 29, 2010, 09:57:48 PM
I went golfing today, on the 2nd hole we encountered some frost and as walked over to where I drove my ball to I had a really nasty fall directly on my right (operated) hip on ground that was rock hard, probably as hard as cement.

I am not a small guy and I went down very hard but except for some bruising I feel great, I went to Bally's and swam for an hour then 20 minutes in the whirpool and I felt much better.

Why I mention this?  It's more to show how durable a hip resurfacing can be, my first fall was the Winter after my August 08 surgery, I fell on the cement, again, directly on my hip and all was well.

I am sure that the components of your resurfaced hips and considerably harder and more resilient that the rest if you. So although you need not worry about the resurfacing, you should take care to look after yourself. Hope any bruising you have gets better quickly.

I hear you Chuck. At 5 months I went down very hard on my right hip on ice on my mountain bike. I was physically shook up but hip was fine. moe

I'm right handed, I don't know if that is why I always go down on my right or not, but yes, it's scary.  After the initial shock of knowing I took the spill next was "did my hip survive it?"

Glad to hear that everything is still well with your hip.  I have fallen twice on my BHR hip too.  Once off the bike and once off a small step I did not see.  I think the devices are now part of our bodies if we take it easy on them!

Good Luck.

I guess you could say it "keeps a licking and keeps on ticking"  :)

I'm a few months from surgyer and I jokingly tell my friends that while I am limping now, in a few months I will be bionic!!  ...  sounds like there is some truth to that.. :)

Good to know. I'm always worried I could take a fall off my horses some day!!  Lu

Agreed - that's very reassuring. Apart from skiing and jumping out of an aeroplane, I don't think I've ever really fallen onto my  (then unoperated) hip, but now,  10 days post op, it has been one of the things preying on my mind. I'm sure the more careful I try to be, the more likely I am to fall. So these posts have been really helpful. Thanks to all.
(Will try not to test the statistics, though).
