Title: Sciatica discomfort
Post by: margot on June 27, 2011, 12:15:43 AM
I am now about 11 weeks post-op and have been doing well.  Because I'm only in my early 50's and used to be a runner (I had to quit 5 yrs ago because of the hip pain) I completely assumed I'd recover quickly.  However, this hasn't quite been the case.  My therapist is telling me that because of the years of adapted walking, some of the muscles have not been used for a long time...and take time to 'wake up'.  So, I can understand that and am learning to be more patient with my recovery.

However, I've been experiencing a totally unexpected annoyance (I can think of stronger words for it!).  Since immediately after surgery I had an ache in my buttock, behind the knee, calf and heel.  The calf also felt kind of numb.  But it all got kind of blended with post-op discomfort and was of no real concern.  But now, 11 weeks later, I'm a bit worried about it.  I wouldn't call it  'pain', but more an ache.  It's especially annoying at night as it prevents sleep.  The only way to make it go away is by moving the leg....kind of hard to sleep that way!  I ice at least twice a day.  Does or did anyone else experience this sciatica pain?  Is there an end?  Any solutions?

Margot, I am now close to 6 weeks post-op and I got also pain in the rear side of the knee, but not in the heel. This has been solved by local massage and stretching. I remember being worry after surgery because at this time, this pain had made me unable to sleep well.
I do not know if it was sciatica pain or not, but the fact is that PT has solved this.
