How is labral damage taken care of in resurfacing surgery?
All of the labrum is removed no need for it with a hr device.
But, if you only have a torn labrum, you don't need your hip resurfaced. You only need your labrum repaired.
That is true but if it's torn through degeneration as mine was then eventually oa will win the day and a new joint will be needed.
Yes, I have to agree. I wasted money on the labral tear and should have just waited for OA to be bad enough for the BHR as I have had to fork out for both operations now. Admittedly, there appeard to be no arthritis until they went in to fix the tear but a little frustrating nonetheless
Besides the arthritis, I have a torn labrum on the right. I had had a torn shoulder labrum repaired six years ago with excellent results so when I saw that in my MRI report I went back to the doctor and asked ''what if you fix the labrum?'' His reply ''it won't help. the arthritis is the problem.''
Yeah I belive torn laberums can be a symptom of oa. If you have oa then from what I've been told and from what I've read the out come of an arthroscopy isn't normally as good. Mine gave me more rom but the joint is too worn to do anything with the new rom.

Thanks mate. I carnt wait! I'm just hoping and praying that it goes well and I can in time get back to my "normal" stuff. I am going to modify my training slightly but I still want to be able to do my boxing and judo etc.

Are you getting bhr's then? Hope it goes really well for you! Are you having the surgeries the same day or a few days apart?
Yes, BHR's both the same day. I'll spend 3 or 4 days in the hospital then a week to a week and a half at the Rusk Rehab Hospital in the City and when I come out if all goes well I'll be walking with two hand crutches.
If I went one at a time I'd have to come home, struggle with everything, get to PT and once I get better I have to do it all over again. This way while I'm going through the worst of it, I'll be in the rahab getting taken care of and getting 3 to 4 hours a day of PT
I'm thinking of it as the Ironman version of hip resurfacing!

I had arthroscopic surgery about a year ago to remove pieces of a severely torn labrum. It was not successful for me. I am having hip resurfacing on 12/5. I think it is always wise to try the least invasive approach. I was hoping to by 3-5 years before hip resurfacing or total hip with the arthroscopic surgery but it just didn't work out that way. I really never recovered from the surgery and a little over a year later I am facing another surgery.

Your probably right about trying the most conservative approach. But from what surgeons have told me arthroscopy is very rarely successful if oa is already at work. To be fair Mr conroy the surgeon who did mine told me that before the op and I kind of with my desperation forced him to do it. Still it bought me a year!
I too almost went the arthrosopy approach. I had surgery scheduled for Oct. 21st of this year and I didn't get the feeling it would really help so I sought out a second opinion. When I met with my surgeon he laughed and said that with how bad my hip is arthrosopy is a complete waste of time. I go in on Monday to have my hip resurfaced.

My surgeon for the arthroscopic surgery never promised me the moon either. When Dr. Gross saw the pictures that were taken during the arthroscopic surgery, he said there was enough OA that he personally would not have bothered with the the arthroscopic surgery (but rather gone right to HR or THR surgery). Oh well, at the time it seemed like a good idea and I didn't seek a second opinion because I was in excruciating pain with the labral tear. That pain did go away but now I have the nagging pain and loss of rom associated its OA.
I've been lucky in that I don't have that much pain unless I aggravate it some how. I'm aware of my hip but it's not agony 95% of the time.
I really really wanted the arthroscopy to work and so I probably just didn't listen to any possible negative stuff. It did give me a lot more rom tho as before the op there was virtually no movement in the hip.
