Title: I think I messed things up. UGGG
Post by: PistolPete on February 20, 2012, 07:59:37 AM
Well, a week ago Sunday I had to test for my 4th degree blackbelt and since that test things have not gone well at all.  My hip has been ultra sore and I'm getting a ton of clicking and things just don't feel right.  I meet with my Surgeon on the 29th and will talk to him about it but I'm praying I didn't mess anything up.  The test wasn't all that difficult and I didn't feel like I tweaked anything during it but on the way home things just didn't feel right and it's been the same for the past 8 days.  A word to the wise is to make sure not to do stupid things like this when you're only 3 months post-op.

I hope it is nothing serious. Hopefully it is muscle pain. My best wishes for you.

Ah Pete I hope your ok! However I thinks that this is why most of the top surgeons say to wait up to 12 months.

Did your doctor allow those kinds of activities?

Hope it turns out to be muscular, not implant related.

Pete, here's hoping nothing happened to the implant. I've been through those tests, they are not for the faint of heart. Wishing good things for you, man.

What you have may be just muscular, and set you back only a bit.

Yes, I'm curious too as to what types of tests are conducted.  Please do tell.

Well, not BJJ (not my style), but in hapkido, it was a full day of testing, with both form and sparring. I did a few forms of Tae Kwon Do, but it is a more mixed style, like Jiu Jitsu. So we did sparring with hands, feet, grappling, ground fighting, etc. included. Mine lasted probably from 10 in the morning to about 3 in the afternoon. I had about six bouts, after the initial forms, etc.

In Tae Kwon Do, no grappling, pressure point techniques, etc, but the morning was devoted to forms and more forms (quite a few to cover at black belt level), other techniques and demonstrations. My school is heavy into Olympic TKD, so we have three one minute rounds with knockouts, etc. no grappling, though unfortunately. The afternoon was about six bouts with others testing for black belts, or with existing black belts. Then there were some specialized sparring, one vs. two, etc. One of my friends was testing for third degree on one test, he had to fight me without using legs, just boxing.

Interesting stuff. I was beat at the end of each day. Each school is different, though and I took the first degree tests, not 4th degree like Pete. Don't know what's involved in that.

Normally the blackbelt tests are BRUTAL and 6-8 hours long.  That being said for my 4th degree it really wasn't hard at all.  My instructor knew I had my hip replaced so it was a bit more tailored towards that.  I had to do a few rounds on the bag and didn't go hard at all with any kicking.  We did a pulling drill that might have caused some strain on my hip and some sparring but I only used my hands.  We didn't do any BJJ although I did take one of the guys down but nothing with any impact.  I really think it was just muscular to be totally honest.  I just got back from the gym and did the exercise bike for 15 minutes or so and did some adductor and abductor machines along with lunges and the eliptical.  Nothing hard and now I feel great.  I'm guessing my hip is just sore from overuse and because I rested for the week it might have just made things a bit worse.

Pistol,  let's hope that you really just strained everything pretty bad.  If you did you should be icing that hip every two hours and taking an anti-inflammatory twice a day.  Keep this up until you see the doc.

Good luck, I'll be hoping for the best for you.

Pete,
Hope it's nothing serious mate & like Woody said - ice, rest, ice, rest ice, rest.
Remember, this is a long term investment and you're still in relatively early days.
Congrats though - I trust you passed the test!?

Thanks Hern I appreciate it.  OK, so I hit the gym today and now I feel great.  Here is what I'm thinking.  I had the test on Sunday and was REALLY sore after.  Then took it easy Monday and Tuesday and had PT on Wed.  I struggled thru that to say the least.  Well, after PT I drove 4 hours to New York for a 3 day business meeting.  During the 3 days I sat for 6+ hours each day on uncomfortable chairs.  Needless to say I was really stiff each night and didn't have a chance to get on a bike or anything.  Then at the end of day 3 I got back in my car after sitting for 6+ hours and drove home 4 hours.  I got in really late Saturday night and then just relaxed yesterday.  I think the reason things are so sore is because of the above...

Well you forgot to mention those. That definitely would have done a job on me where you are test or no. Oh well. Good that you feel fine, keep it going.

Take it easy Bruce Hippee.  I thought I messed things up at about 4 months post op with a hard workout. I heard a funny sound and some sharp pain. I called my surgoen and she told me to call back in three days if it didnt get better. It got better the next day and I haven't spoken to her since. I also eased up off the workouts.

Be like Water grasshopper!!!

I have had several times during my recovery and 3-1/2 years with my BHR when I thought " I just screwed up my hip".  I think most on the board can relate.  Lucky that after a few days it felt better and it just healed on its own.

With that said, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!.  You have just had major surgery and not even close to being healed. You only have one body and it has to last a lifetime. At least give it a chance and let it heal.

At 4 months I was just starting Tai Chi.  After 25+ years at Chinese Martial Arts I keep my kicks at waist level and eliminated most stomps and other severe moves.  I could work myself back to these moves but the wear and tear on my hips, knees and back is not worth it. I am trying to find a balance of what I enjoy and what is going to tear up my body.
Glad you are feeling better,
Bill

Good point Fenceman - on both counts.

I'm not near as far along, but I've done similar things where I think I screwed it up, but surprisingly the next day, most of the pain is gone and I take a break from the activity and then get back to it.

I ran on day 10 post op to get my kids out of bed during an earthquake. Thought I'd stuffed things up with immediate pain. Next day or two everything was good. The device is very solid & it takes a lot to move it - even early on. A fall down stairs or good rugby tackle is definitely to be avoided!!

Well, today I'm feeling much better.  I did an easy workout doing squats (no weights) and lunges etc. while teaching my kickboxing classes.  No more pain and nothing feeling weird so I'm guessing all is good.  I meet with my surgeon next week and I'm sure I won't have any problems.

True fuzzy8 - I want to dunk, but I never could before, so that may be a goal for me  ::) . I am starting to do some jumping, and can tell that I'm going to relearn some basics before I think of playing hoops again.

Recently had my own scare. Coming up on 1 year mark March 2, have been shooting hoops for a couple of months now w/ Dr.'s OK but a couple of weeks ago, against my better judgement, I got into a little 2-on-2 game - was told to wait full year before doing so, but hey, I was past 11 months. Things were fine during, but oh, boy, afterward. Then last weekend, I was doing a bike ride, my tire caught in a seam in the road and I took a spill. Landed on other hip, but pretty jarring none the less. So it's been hurting a bit, very much "aware" of it again. Don't really think I screwed anything up, but hard to put it out of my mind. I see Dr. March 1, so hopefully I will rest easier afterward.

I had a couple of scares after (car accident at five months, stomp on the brake with the operated hip foot while being driven forward by a crazed octogenarian), things worked out, so I think it's probably good.

From what I've heard, the femoral neck break you would know right away, and at one year it's not a high probability, so the only other thing is any slippage. If the cup has taken to your bone well, slippage at one year is very low (stops altogether at 1.5 or 2, I thing), so you probably have a pretty strong joint right now.

Who won the 2 on 2?

I don't think I would have done any sparring or karate at 3 months post op...  :)  But at 6 weeks post op I did go to Disneyland.  :)  I didn't ride space mountain, but did go on some more "calm" rides... what screwed me was walking around all day.  I must have done 5-10 miles of walking.. which was probably too much.  i had my cane.. sat a lot..but in the end, I overdid it.  when I got to Disneyland I felt perfect.  after I got home my hip was sore and it stayed sore for a good two weeks.  I was petrified i screwed something up.. but it gradually got all better...

i'm at EXACTLY one year post op tomorrow.  my hip feels wondeful.  I was at the gym today..did 30 minutes on the elliptical and did some leg exercises.. felt like a million bucks.  so... you can overdo it.. have a setback..be in minor pain for a while..but odds are it will get better.. just take it easy.

you probably just agitated soft tissue...but hey.. why not take it easy until at about 6 months?  you have your whole life to do all that stuff.. you went through a serious surgery.. no point in tempting fate by messing something up so soon in teh recovery process.

i hope it all works out for you.  I found that during the recovery process..there were ups and downs... but in the end. it was all up.  Good luck!!

Thanks Woodstock it's def. cool to be a Master.  Well, it's been another week and I feel AWESOME!!!  No pain at all and nothing going on.  Been working out but being smart about it.  I meet with my surgeon on Wed. of this week so I'm sure I will get a good report.  Feeling better each day and getting back into shape.

I actually was at the gym this morning and met up with the guy that referred me to my surgeon who had his hip resurfaced 3 years ago.  He said he no longer even thinks about the hip and has his life back 100 percent and said it's the best thing he's ever done.

Good to know about another hippy / Snyder / positive alumnus. He certainly has some failures as noted here, but I'm fine on both hips and my brother in law seems to be good with his mini hip.
