Title: First mountain hike, boy am I sore!
Post by: Woodstock Hippy on April 08, 2012, 08:35:55 AM
It's amazing, but I'm not surprised.  I did a 1.5 hour hike in the mountains near my house on Friday with way more vertical than I've been doing, and lot's of rocks and uneven surface and on Sunday my hips are still sore.  Not killing me but sore enough that I wasn't able to get on on the road bike yesterday.  It's too bad that the pool it closed today or I'd do a nice workout with the pull buoy.  Oh well, I'll so a nice flat walk in the woods when I get back to Long Island later and hit the pool tomorrow.

I feel like I'm ready to run, it's only 4 weeks away, but who would have thought that I wasn't ready to hike.

Happy Easter everybody.

Well, there's hiking and there's hiking, Woody. Sounds like you ran into the latter. Let those muscles rest and I know you'll be back on it.

It's amazing how a new motion can upset the muscles.  I started using the heating pad again and it all feels good again.  Now I'll go out for a walk in the nice mellow Long Island woods.

I did a 3 mile hike today in the forest behind our house, and it will be interesting to see how I feel in the morning. Decent footing and not a huge amount of vertical - maybe 200' from high point to low - but I went further than I planned because it had been 5 months since I last hiked there and I got lost!

Hiking is not easy Woody, especially when you get into some elevation with 40 lbs on your back for a few hours.  I believe it's great preparation to lead you into running at your 6 month mark.  Mixing it up is the key.
I'm a little leary of this 25k I got myself into this Saturday...just a long hike right?

25K is a bit of a distance, but you've been working up to it, right?

Hmmm  If I had a Pool Bo(u)y I'd be in the pool in no time.  LOL

I walk about 1.5 miles in my mountain neighborhood.  Dirt roads, a good elevation gain on my loop, both up and down.  I have felt better and better each day, but know what you mean - those first few times of climbing and descending are a challenge.  Ice is still my best friend.  I am now back to a very brisk pace and can keep it up for 3/4s of my walk now.  Hubby's impressed cuz I'm not yelling "PACE" to him any more to get him to slow down to my speed.   :
