Title: Dr. Su BHR 2012
Post by: Rob6297 on April 27, 2012, 04:53:47 PM
Just wanted to report that I had a RBHR by Dr. Su of Hospital For Special Surgery on April 20,2012.  I was extremely apprehensive in the days leading up to the operation, or just plain scared.  My day started at 3:30am on a ride from CT to NYC.  When I arrived I checked in and was checked and re-checked as to why I was there.  The nerves came to a head about an hour before the procedure until Dr. Su came in and confidently asked if I had questions and told me HE was all ready (glad one of us was) but this put me at ease and I was finally all in.  After Dr. Su left my anesthesiologist came in and was just great with me, walked me through what he was going to do etc.  As I entered the OR I was again nervous but was out within 2 minutes if not less.  I do not remember anything about the OR after that. I woke up in recovery (pacu) feeling no pain. None!  Still couldn't feel my legs for about 40 minutes but then they came back.  During that time the nurse inserted the Foley catheter which I did not feel going in.  They took me to the ward in about 2 hours when a room opened, and what an amazing view of Roosevelt Island and the East river.  Awesome view!  No complaints about any staff, in fact they were wonderful except one nurses aid (whom I won't mention).  The pain was never bad for me and I was off pain meds the next morning and took 2 pills that day and then nothing except regular Tylenol until Tuesday and then nothing.  That is one thing I'd like to stress to the people who are apprehensive about getting this done......it truly was no big deal as far as the operation and the pain.  I made a mountain out of a molehill in my head.    I was released after my second try doing the pt walk. The first time I was dizzy, Saturday morning after the last pain meds. I stayed until Sunday because of that dizziness due to pain meds.  At home the Pt has gone great so far.  Today is exactly one week post op and I'm walking my driveway and my stairs regularly.  I still have some quad weakness and my abductors and adducters need more work but I feel great and couldn't be happier with the outcome.  If anyone has any questions or wants more detail about HSS, Dr. Su or the operation itself, don't hesitate to contact me.  For any nervous Nellie's like me......take it easy...isn't as bad as you think!

Great report, Joe.  You'll be back on your feet in no time!

Just one question, how come your screen name is Rob and you real name is Joe?

Had my 1 month check up today ( although a few days shy of a month).  I was checked by Dr. Su's PA Victoria, who is wonderful, takes all the time you need, and answers all your questions completely.  I was taken off all walking aids, blood thinners, and given back my right to drive! I now will go to outpatient PT and my gym. (no heavy lifting while standing).  My flexibility was great and I can sit Indian style again ( not 100% comfortable yet).  I'm free to ride my bike outdoors as soon as I feel comfortable and steady ( cannot fall).  I have been riding indoors daily for 15 to 20 mins. And walking outdoors with a cane for about a mile or so daily along with the daily PT excercises.   So happy to shed the cane!  My experience has been wonderful with hip resurfacing, and I have range of motion that I have not felt in at least 2 years.  I also saw Dr. Su on the way out of the exam room and gave him a quick hug and a thank you for giving me my active life back! Hopefully anyone reading this that has any apprehension will get this operation done and NOT wait like many surgeons recommend.  Good luck to all!

I am now 5 weeks post op and feeling great.  I have been working full time since 3 weeks post op. I do commute 1 hour each way by car.  I am in outpatient PT and feel I am doing very well with all the excercises and always ice when I get home.  I rode my bicycle outdoors yesterday and finally felt normal and better than I have in 2 years without any buttuck or groin pain. I was not able to properly reach my handlebars for 2 years or put my shoes on!  If you read this and are contemplating getting the procedure done......don't hesitate if your quality of life was affected like mine.
Good luck
Joe

My wife noticed today that I don't even have a hint of a limp anymore!  I'm 28 days post op and feeling better each day. Can't say enough how happy I am to have gotten this done and behind me.

Great stuff Joe! Keep it up, love the results and the optimism. You'll still hit some setbacks along the way, but you'll keep steamrollering forward. Excellent.
