Title: Choosing a Doctor
Post by: Candymanbet1 on June 08, 2012, 12:22:10 AM
I am considering hip resurfacing with either Dr. De Smet in Belgium or Dr. Su in New York.  Would anyone have advice/opinion on using one over the other?

Thanks,

Tim

Tim if your looking at going international for your op then it would be worth looking at Derrick Mcminn here in the UK and also Vijay Bose in India. I know Mr Mcminn takes US insurance and it works out cheaper for the insurance company with him as opposed to a US surgeon.

I think any doctor previously mentioned in this thread would be a great choice.

Both surgeons are excellent.  Dr. De Smet, my surgeon, has done over 3000 hip resurfacings.  I went to him because he had a great post op plan while you stayed at the Holiday Inn and I know many, many people that had gone to him before I did in 2006.  He is one of the best in the world.

Dr. Su is also excellent and one of the best in the US.

You can't go wrong with either.  I prefered flying to Belgium instead of India, but would let Dr. Bose do my other hip if I were closer to him.  Also, another great surgeon.

Many insurance companies will pay for surgery with Dr. De Smet, but you have to pay up front and be reimbursed.

Absolutely think Dr. Su and HSS did a great job with my BHR.  You will have to see if your insurance covers everything, as mine did not and you could end up with some bills.  I feel it was worth it, but if another of the great Dr.'s recommended cover it all that may be the way to go. Good luck with your research, you're on the right track!
