Title: Advice please - Scan results in!
Post by: rubyred on July 07, 2012, 11:23:47 AM
Hi all,

As some of you may be aware, I've been awaiting the results of a CT scan to see just how bad my hip joint is. I've previously been seen by Mr Treacy who said that a THR/HR is probably not likely due to the lack of OA, so he sent me to see his colleague, Mr Bache to find out about having a PAO instead.

He sent me for a CT scan to assess my suitability and I recieved a letter with the results today that reads -

"The scans confirm much as I fear that there is some degenerative change within your hip joint.

It would still be possible to perform the PAO surgery. This is a major procedure and I think there is at least a 50% chance that the results will not be satisfactory in that you are only likely to get short-term benefit and you are likely to go on and get some arthritic change in the joint over a period of time. The other option is to consider a joint replacement or resurfacing. This is much more likely to give you pain relief, but of course the catch with this scerario is that you are still relatively young.

I am not sure if you would wish to come to Birmingham to discuss the arthroplasty options with Mr Treacy or if you are still interested in the joint preserving surgery then I would be happy to see you again in my clinic."

I'm in a bit of a muddle as my first choice has always been the HR, but since Mr Treacy said it wasn't likely I've kind of put that idea to the back of mind. But now is Mr Bache saying it's possible on review of the CT scan? Mr Treacy has only ever had xray's and a MRI report (no images) to go on...

I'm confused and I don't want to get my hopes up that I can have a HR now. I need to ring Mr Bache's secretary on Monday with my decision.

Hay ruby! If it were me I'd speak to Mr Bache further. If he says in his mind it's  not going to do you much good in the long run then I would ask to be referred back to Mr T as I'm sure further armed with the knowledge that there's arthritic change within the joint he may well feel it's more appropriate to put you a nice shiny BHR in.

Hi Danny!

I've a feeling i'm going to be an 'inbetweener' Too bad for a PAO but not quite bad enough for a BHR. This has been my fear all the way along that my original surgeons down here in Essex were right that 'no other surgeon will touch you'.

I think I really do need to get back to Mr T as soon as possible. Maybe the CT has shown further damage or maybe i've deteriorated further since I saw Mr Treacy last.

Oh Ruby!!! Decisions.

I think Danny is right. I think you should go see Mr Bache and discuss it throughly with him. You cant be expected to get an idea as to what you want to do from a letter. I would go see him and discuss it and ask about what he classes as a 'short term benefit'. Then if it all doesnt seem quite worth it, get referred back to Mr T.

At least there is movement! Chin up x

Ruby I'm sure if your too bad for a pao then Mr T will concede that there's no other option. I'm thinking of ya Hun!

I'm frantically trying to recall what Mr T said when I asked what my hips future was. I think it was something along the lines of 'If a patient keeps coming back in that much pain then it leaves me no alternative'. I think maybe with me he wanted to eliminate all possible avenues first before diving straight in.

I don't think i'm a regular 'black and white' case.

I think he's got your best interests at heart I think some surgeons would dive straight in when what they do is not nessicerily the best for the patient. He will have doe this if you end up going back to him.

Hi Ruby-I think things will move forward for you now.
You've had a look at an alternative with Mr Bache and as there seems to be no certainty in the procedure, I don't think there will be any question of Mr Treacy not giving you a new joint.
They won't let you suffer on in pain. Keep positive.
I just got my date-8th August, hopefully you won't be to far behind.
Cheers,Mike.

Hi Danny-it's a strange thing.
I've spent 6 months thinking about it and now having that date feels weird.  I went back to Birmingham for the pre-op assessment last week and it really drives it home about whats going to happen.
I imagine all you hippys experienced the same.
I'm focusing hard on the pain free future

Hi Ruby,
Just so you don't feel alone in the process of your diagnosis, I had something somewhat similar. When Dr Gross looked at my X-rays, he felt that there was some hope of sending me elsewhere to have some type of joint preserving surgery to put off a replacement. He then suggested that we do a CT scan to clarify the decision. After looking at those, he said that the other options could be eliminated, and so we proceeded with the resurfacing. It just goes to show that X-rays do not always tell enough of the story to make clear decisions. The very good news in both of our cases is that we have excellent doctors who  have our best interests at heart.

You'll be fine mike. To be honest I really couldn't wait to go under the knife. I knew it was my only chance of regaining my life. I know you've been told your not guaranteed a BHR but rest assured if anyone can give you one it's Ronan Treacy if you wake up with a thr then a BHR couldn't be done by anyone.

I agree. Danny and several others had a difficult path also, but it seems like the progress is good, you'll get there and at least know that all avenues have been explored and pounded into dust  :o .

Ruby,
I know its hard to deal with. You have had it far worse than i did. But from the sounds of it you are making progress now. Now that Mr Bache has confirmed that you have significant arthritis in your joint i susspect that Mr T will be happier with operating on you.
Keep the faith you are nearly there.

It's why I never looked at it before the surgery. Remember one thing - you're not conscious or maybe not caring at that point. I was anesthetized, went to sleep quickly and woke up hours later when all of that was done. No fuss, other that the recovery.

Ha I watched em all before the op! I actually remember discussing with the aneathatist my options I said to him is there any chance Mr T won't be doing the op himself? He asked what that had to do with it and I replied if theres any chance that he won't be doing it himself and it could be one of his monkeys then I would only have a spinal! As I was not giving my consent for anyone else to touch me! I reaffirmed this with Mr T in the pre op room! ;D
I'd actually like to go to see a live surgery!

It was one of Mr McMinn's surgery's and he said that the process had been speeded up for video purposes and that it takes about one hour to perfom. Is that really all? I thought it would have been much longer than that.

Ruby Mr T does them from knife to skin to full closure in an average of 25 mins! He is apparently the fastest in the world! I suppose the 7000+ operations have obviously paid off for him!  ;D

I'm fine with blood and all sorts - I work in a hospital after all!

I'm kind of different if it's me though, I fainted once when I had some stitches removed from my foot yet when the nurse was changing my mum's dressing following her cancer op, I was right in there having a good old look lol!

1am Sunday morning here and the horrible damp, wet weather that has taken over the UK of late is playing havoc with my hip.

4 Co-Codomol and 2 Diclofenic later and the pain is still there, throbbing away not letting me sleep even though the medication has made me so sleepy.

Roll on seeing Mr Treacy again.

Hang on in there Ruby- it won`t be long now. I remember the weekend before my operation (having had to stop taking the arcoxia prior to surgery as instructed). Laid there crying with the  pain, my left leg felt as if it were on fire. Thought if I called an ambulance they would take me in and give me morphine, then I`d never get to Birmingham for the sugery. In the end I had to take two arcoxia just to deaden the pain a little. At least you know
you`re so ready to get it fixed, remember to tell Mr T!
Also am certain this weather really doesn`t help. When I was in California 3 months ago I had none, came back here and feel as though have gone backwards! The sun and warmer climate sure makes a difference. x

I think the weather does make a huge difference. Today i've woken up and the sun is shining, clear blue skies and although i'm not pain free it's certainly not half as bad as it was last night! That was awful, one of the worst nights i've ever had. I even woke my mum up with my crying  :'(

I really hope Mr T agrees to operate on me now. I'm not sure how I'm going to continue like this if he still says no  :( x

Good Luck Ruby.  Been watching your slow progress.

The top surgeons often take less than one hour to do a hip resurfacing.  I have seen training videos at the courses and also watched live surgeries.  It is not as brutal as you thinnk. The surgeons are a mix of artist, mechanic and doctor.  Everything they do is done very carefully and under the eyes of many in the OR.  The medical rep is always there in case they need a different sized device or a THR or have a special problem.  The top surgeons are very, very skilled.  That is something that only experience can give to them along with some God given skills.

Dr. Weeden did a whole video just for my website explaining every thing that is done so patients can learn.  http://www.surfacehippy.info/shvideos/surgery-videos-hip-resurfacing.php (http://www.surfacehippy.info/shvideos/surgery-videos-hip-resurfacing.php)

Pat- such a lovely description, thank you

Ruby,

From what I've read about your situation if it were me I would be persistent about the amount of pain you are having, Treacy is one of the best docs for hips in the world and I would be persistent to him, eventually he'll give in and do the surgery.

I hate to see people taking pain meds for long periods of time, long term nothing good comes from taking that stuff.

Ruby Im no hip surgeon but i am convinced that now Mr Banche has stated that the chances of a PAO being successful are less than 50/50 Mr T will have you in for a BHR. I think initailly he was probably doing what was clinically appropriate as from the xrays there was little sign of OA(there was little evidence on mine too was only after my hip scope that they knew the true state of the joint space.) It would be irresposible for him to just go ahead with a prostetic when other options were possible and more conservative. Now they have been exhausted i think he will opperate on you.

I think if Mr T agrees to operate then I will cry with happiness - literally! He didn't come across to me as a surgeon who will leave his patients in pain. My surgeon down here was quite happy to and believe me once i know the state of play after my next appointment with Mr T, then a letter will be written to my former surgeon stating just how wrong he was to say that surgery will not fix me and no other surgeon will operate.

There is hope! So pleased that your situation looks more positive Ruby. I thought of you all when on hols, the warm weather helped a bit but the travelling really hurt. Still picking up the pieces and cold damp Scottish weather isn't helping. Feel like a pill box, putting so many in at the moment. I'm hoping for my own bit of positivity next Thursday .... Am now convinced that ive staved off ricketts for another year! Not to mention the food, I put the Dukan down over the hols but am catching up now, am hoping the surgeon sees that I'm willing to do my bit, although no improvement in pain yet despite 8 kg loss. Ruby, I used to be in HR, they should not be giving you a warning! You are  a member of staff who has a disability currently, they should be working with you to accommodate your problems not adding to the stress. Obviously I don't know how they treated you but I'd suggest that you have a chat with your GP and then book a meeting with your HR officer. Try and get them to see how you are being affected, what they might do to assist (better ergonomic chair, flex working, or even a temp change to your working practices) as an 8yr member of staff you have longevity on your side, a demonstrable committment to your company and they have a legal obligation to facilitate your working there and they also have an obligation to treat you humanely and not add to your circumstances with stress. I'd advise you wrote them a letter to convey all of this and use it in your meeting to discuss issues, a letter from your GP in your hand bag should you need it as a back up.
I'm so sorry you've been treated this way. Hang in there!  Xx Sal

I'm better than yesterday but am taking such a lot of painkillers that I'm totally out of it, I know there are many out in the world who spend a fortune trying to achieve that  ;) but I hate it. I've got a new pain management system from the doc, so need to give it a while to settle down. I'm on meloxicam and BuTrans patches, Tramadol top ups or cocodamol top ups and some codeine so ican alternate and my sleeping tablets which I use when hubby is home so that I don't disturb him. The co-codamol has lost its effectiveness  :( but hopefully by alternating I won't get more used to it. All that stuff only takes the edge off so I don't know what is next. Sorry to hear you're no having such a great day. Only a few days to go tho Ruby, I am sure Mr T is going to give you what you need! Xx

Oh Anna, still no appointment date with Mr O'Hara? I went back and read your posts to see if I'd missed something when on holiday, noticed you mentioned Glentress, not far from me. You should come and stay! Slight problem of two staircases but I'd feed you enough wine that you wouldn't notice  ;D have you chased his office, it seems like a long time to wait to get allocated an appt. chin up and come n stay! Anna,

How long has it been for you now? From seeing my GP to getting to see Mr T was about 6 weeks. x
Title: Re: Advice please - Scan results in!
Post by: Anna on July 21, 2012, 08:56:11 PM
Did you have a good holiday Sal? Id definately come stay. Im sure I could cope with the stairs .... especially as you have promised food and wine!!! :) I really want to go mountain biking up near you. Its supposed to be ace.

I saw Mr T on 11th June I think so it has been a while but hes had to write to my GP to get me referred. Then it took me ages to get an appointment with my GP to 'discuss' the options. Then I had my CT scan up here so that they could send it down to Mr O'Hara. Then I had to book a telephone consultation with my GP to get referred to Mr O'Hara .... now im just waiting for a date to meet him! Everything takes soooo long. It was only last week that my GP has finally referred me properly so im expecting a letter soon .... fingers crossed x

I think these things, especially if they're not 'cut and dry' can take their time. I was first referred to Mr T August 2011... and only now can I see a light at the end of the tunnel. It's heartbreaking when you're in so much pain and you're begging someone to fix you. x

Yeah, I think they want to explore all options. I just wish everything didnt take so long! So its been nearly a year for you Ruby and you are back where you started!!! Lol, hopefully now Mr T can sort you and you know that a BHR is the best option for you after exhausting everything else  :)

I only started the ball rolling in march this year so I suppose I still have a way to go. Im keeping my fingers crossed that I will have an op before christmas but who knows x

right Girls, we ARE going to get fixed.  and hopefully all three before Xmas, thinking positively and we will make it happen.  We should get together for a glentress trip the three of us, Ruby and Anna you can ride bikes and laugh at my attempts (its been, oh 20years since i rode!) or i can be chauffeur up the hills for you guys which i normally do for Hubby and the kids! I'll need to be fixed first because  i can't drive at the mo but It would be nice to all meet up and throw some wine at or after our problems! i feel that we are living through the same nightmare at the moment.  So, something to look forward to is always good!  Mr T, Mr V and Mr O'H are definitely going to fix us, am sending them positive vibes mmmmmmmm mmmmmmmm mmmmmmm.  Praying for a date for you soon Anna.  xx

Thanks guys.

I managed to haul myself in and out of the bath, but it was all a bit of a drama and there ended up being more water on the floor than in the tub!! I haven't taken any pain medicine today as nothing I have works any longer  :( I'm seeing my GP on the 31st to see about getting some stronger meds.

Am now just laying on the bed, feeling quite sorry for myself, wishing it was Wednesday evening and I knew what was going on.

Ruby, you maybe a long way from Scotland but you`re close to me! As Danny said make sure you tell MrT exactly how bad the pain is!! He will not let you continue to suffer, a year ago I was in the same boat.
Stick to just pain meds (yes I know they don`t help much when it gets this bad) but they ask you to stop taking anti-inflammatories 2-3 weeks before they will operate. If you have already stopped taking them, he will be able to operate even sooner :) x

Mine would not be questions, I would make sure that Dr. T knows the massive pain I'm in..... break down in tears, make sure he knows that you really need the surgery.

After he gives you a surgery date then ask him questions like, how long is recovery, what will be your restrictions etc, at least with Treacy you do not have to worry about revision rates etc, you already know you have a great doctor.

Chuck

I would ask,
What difficulties to the operation do you envisage?
What device will you use?(ie BHR, BHR with dysplasia cup thr)
What are the chances that you couldn't do a BHR? And would have to switch to thr?
Most importantly how long is his waiting list!!

I'm praying for you hun!

I'm home! And guess who's joining the club?!  ;D

Mr T said he ideally wanted me to wait it out another year/18 months but once he saw me come in on 2 crutches and knowing that I've had every possible bit of conservative treatment we're going for a metal on metal BHR in Sept/Oct time.

He did say that I had to trust him in that once he got in there there would be a slim chance of him having to perform a THR, but he's aiming for the BHR  :)

That is just awesome! Excellent result, given the pain you're in. September will be here before you know it, and you'll have plenty of time in good weather to recuperate.

Really glad for you. Maybe if you want it, let them know that you can go earlier if there's a cancellation.

Haha!!!

I'm so unbelievably relieved this will all be over soon. In all my shock, because I truly believe Mr T was wavering about doing it all... he said that he was trying so hard not to give me a replacement of any sort just yet, I forgot to ask how long I'd be off work for! Doh!!

He also said that my surgery would take a little longer than normal due to the way my pelvis and femoral head are. Trust me to be awkward  ;D

That's great news Ruby.  When you get your BHR, be sure to start a new thread because you are starting a new life.

Good Luck.  I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.  Even if the slim possibility of a THR would happen, the large ball, mom thrs or ceramic thrs allow you to be just as active as with a hip resurfacing.  I would keep the faith and know you are going for a BHR.

Thank you Pat. I can't wait to begin my new life.

I'm not sure why he was undecided at first. He went out in the middle of the consultation to re-check my scans that's when he came in and asked what I'd like him to do for me.

Thats my biggest worry. Surgeons keep telling me to wait and I dont think I can anymore. In my opinion, why waste your life and your youth away on crutches now just so that your ok when im 70. It just doesnt make sense. I see why surgeons want to put it off as long as possible as theres nothing better than your natural joint and replacements only last so long .... but when someone is in so much pain?

Oh well, that doesnt matter for you now missie. Very excited for you. I love Pats thoughts ..... get ready to start your new life  ;D

Ruby I knew that would be the news you'd Get. Don't worry about ending up with a thr, if he said there was a "slim" chance of a thr then if I know him that's a very very very small chance he hates doing thr's and if it's possible then he's the man I've said it before he's THE most experienced man on the planet your in the best hands possible!!!! Hugs and kisses im pleased the end is in sight for you.

I think the relief combined with the tiredness has completely drained me of all energy. The best day possible with the best result possible.

Anna, keep hanging on. A year ago I was all for throwing in the towel. Convinced nothing or no one could help... even Mr Treacy at first said no, even today to begin with he wasn't 100%. Don't give up fighting.

Mr T told me about a new device he and his partner have divised made especially for women, apparently he gets better results in male BHR's, but it's still in the 'experimental' stages.

That's interesting about a new device. However remember things in orthopaedics move very very slowly. The BHR is still considered new in many circles!

Thanks Guys, great news all round, the Cormet is fine on the left, it's a mini hip on the right, a Corin short stem! Initially he wanted to scope first but he really understood that life has got to the point where we were off to shop for wheelchairs, think about moving house and that the whole family's lives were on hold. As he put it, a case of out out damn spot. So relieved. So we are all set for 14th August. Getting back from Cambridge will be a bit of a trial but guys on here fly all over the world after surgery so I shall try not to be a wimp.  Thanks for all the good wishes, just Anna to get sorted now, any letters in the post today? Good news on both counts, that the Cormet is in good shape, and the replacement on the right. My brother in law had a Corin mini hip (short stem) put in last year, has done great with it, is working out four times a week and loving not having pain.

Really good.

Awesome Ruby...
Most helpful for me were:
In hospital, slippery basketball type shorts and slip on Croc type shoes.
At home, several gel type ice packs and a raised toilet seat for the first two weeks.
Most importantly, an extremely large box of prunes, painkillers messed with my regularity.
All the best...
David  :)

Is there a wall that you can lean on next to it, or is it free standing? You may want to talk it over with an occupational therapist in the hospital so you can learn how to properly negotiate that. My occupational therapist needed to sign off on things like this before I could be released from the hospital.

There is a wall to lean against, it's mainly the getting in and out as I have to climb in the tub to get under the shower. I'll make sure someone at the hospital knows all of this when I go in.

Try this procedure (lifted from a good site), which is very similar to what I did:

Read more: http://www.livestrong.com/article/264599-how-to-shower-after-hip-replacement-surgery/#ixzz22KMyprB3 (http://www.livestrong.com/article/264599-how-to-shower-after-hip-replacement-surgery/#ixzz22KMyprB3)

Some folks may do well with a handheld shower nozzle installed, I had no problem with the regular shower nozzle. A grab bar installed on the shower may also help to move around inside the shower. I'd stay away from the temporary suction kind and install a real one if you're going to do that.

Hope this helps.

Hi Ruby, that is Great News!!  my date has also been brought forward to Tuesday..... we'll be recovering together!  I was looking at Sue Ryder webpage last night, the Red Cross loaned me grabbers, raised toilet seats etc last time.  the Red Cross in Scotland doesn't lend anything except commodes or wheelchairs!  English ones do though, my parents have snuck over the border to borrow from NEwcastle Red Cross!  anyway, i digress... bath seats were where i was heading with that.  You may be able to borrow them or buy from Sue Ryder.  I'm taking dresses to my op, easy over the head, no grabbing and minimal rubbing.  Ebay had some fab ones in the size up.  they'll go nicely with the TED stockings!  hope you are feeling good, it isn't long until you have a new BHR inside you.  You will look 10years younger without the pain and healing will be a whole lot different to struggling around as you are.  we will be doing our baby steps together!  good luck!  xx

It's all very scary now it's happening. I've never had big surgery before, my parents are unable to stay in Birmingham and will be unable to visit at this point in time, so will be up there on my own not really knowing how i'm going to feel or be. I know i'm in the best possible hands with Mr T and believe me i'm so happy this is finally being done, but the 'not knowing' is a big thing.

Sal, i've just taken a look at the Red Cross website and we don't have a branch anywhere in Essex it seems! Hereford is the closest and I really can't see my father going there however much he loves me lol. We're going to have a word with our local doctors and see if Social Services provide such things temporarily.

Ruby, are your parents taking you up there and will they wait until you come round?  Once that bit is over you will be very busy with physio and resting after physio followed by mealtimes ... And I'm convinced you 'll meet mike too, whilst you might not know his face you've met on here and you can cheer each other on. The nurses will be lovely too.

Try this number for red cross, there's
0844 412 2830 Chelmsford
0844 412 2772 Harlow

British Red Cross -
www.redcross.org.uk - Equipment Loan Service/49A Mill Rd, Maldon - 01621 855 277

Hello Ruby! I'm 7 weeks post Op at the ROH, I was in Ward 12 for the recovery, don't worry too much, you will be well looked after. The Physio team will go through what aids you will need post op. Toilet seat raisers, grabbers, sock aids and raised chairs are available. It sounds like you live quite a way from the ROH; I live in Ipswich. This makes getting the kit delivered to your home a bit more complicated for the Physios' to arrange but they will sort it out for you. In my case all I have found essential is a raised toilet seat and a grabber. I didn't bother with socks and lived in Crocs! The Physios are reluctant to let you go home without being confident you have everything you need to cope, in my case their was a delay getting a toilet raiser so, to ensure I was released, I bought my own (£40 off amazon for the same model used by the ROH). I could have got a raised chair, but I just doubled up the cushions on my sofa. Blocks to raise beds are also available - as I said, the physios will go through it all with you so don't worry too much. I was daunted by the stairs, the physios said don't worry it's easy; they were correct and will teach you how to tackle them. Because you are more than 25 miles from the ROH they won't be able to take your stitches/staples out, they arranged me an appointment at the local health centre. The ROH staff wre great and went through things I hadn't even thought of. 7 weeks post op I am back to work and wishing I had done this sooner!

Showering is awkward for a bit, I spent 3 weeks leaning over the bath to wash my hair, I then worked out how to get in the bath to shower - it will depend how you get on as to when you can manage it, I had my wife there the first few times in case anything went wrong. It doesn't pay to take risks with slipping.

Good Luck and if you can think of any other questions fire away!

Steve.

Ruby, I was on my own for both, the first time I got a ride from my ex and wish I hadn't, the second I arranged for a taxi to the hospital and got a ride from my parents back.

You can do it by yourself, it is helpful but mostly for moral support to have others there. The second time in particular, my surgeon used a silver infused bandage which I didn't have to change, and I could shower with (without directly pouring water on it), so I was pretty self sufficient even early on.

You're moving pretty early (I forced myself to cook from the second day on) and exercising, walking as much as is possible and sleeping / icing, so you'll be quite busy. My folks did stay for five days the first time and three the second, but after that, I was very self sufficient and I think could easily have been on my own.

As to the moral support, line up friends that you can talk to during the day, the first few weeks you'll need them, as at some point you will get a bit blue every now and then. Use us, but there's no substitute for friends either dropping by or calling / texting. My cousin was my texting buddy, I spoke with my parents a lot, others were a call away.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that you should be busy - the exercises, walking, resting and icing / treatment will suck up your time. Once two or three weeks have elapsed, you'll be a lot more comfortable and ready to get away from the walking aids (your surgeon willing) and be a lot more mobile. It's all good - nothing is insurmountable and I'm sure you'll be able to deal with it well.

Had my pre-op today. All went well. The bed manager tried to get me in the night before as i'm on the morning list and will have to be at the ROH by 7.15, but alas no beds available... I'm not quite sure what the difference is between Wednesday evening and early Thursday morning...

The pre-op nurse called the occupational therapy team whilst I was there and they said that i'll have no restrictions following surgery.... that can't be right can it??

Ruby-they said the same thing to me a couple of weeks ago when I went for pre-op.
There was only one other guy who was having resurfacing and the phisio said " any of Mr Treacys resurfacing patients can ignore this next bit about restrictions"
I was surprised as well. She went on to say he's never had a resurfacing dislocation!
I'm staying over Tuesday night-there's a decent B&B called The Madeira Hotel in Northfield, one mile from the ROH.
Hope to see you there!

Ruby, great news, just caught up!
Take loose clothing, when you get home you will be able to have a carer in morning and evening in Essex, they will help with showering etc, Teds, preparing Food (get micro meals in)
Get a grabber from Amazon, very useful! As you have no restrictions you`ll find it easier :)
Don`t be scared I hadn`t had major surgery before either!

Danny has been down yes, but we`ve been texting a lot every day

Ruby good luck for your up coming op. The no restrictions with Mr T means no 90 degree rule. Obviously he doesnt like you starting high impact stuff for 12 months.

Hi Ruby - I'm due to have my surgery on Thursday 9th August too.  Can empathise, never had any surgery before and this is all a bit surreal.  Trying to take on board all the advice on the site, make lists organise home, work, world.

Will be thinking of you and looking forward to hearing how you get on.  All the best

Ka

What does it feel like Danny? Having a 'fake' joint so to speak? Does it feel like it does before the arthritis sets in?

How are you doing by the way? x

It felt weird for me at the start as your body doesn't know exactly where the new joint/bearing surface is(proprioception) it feels pretty normal to me most of the time now.
I got some bone regrowth pain early on but that was reassuring to me.

I'm still pretty fed up right now. I really do believe that I'll now never be able to reach any of my career or personal asperations thanks to this.;( xx

Hugs to you :( You're not even a year out of surgery. You've got loads of time to improve and strengthen. I feel the same though.... i'm 31 and I wonder what sort of life am I going to have with false joints at such a young age. I wanted to take up running and cycling seriously and I wonder if that's even going to be possible.x

I'm not far off a year post op now it's like 38+ weeks. And I just know my body and I now know where I am in recovery and I know that my body doesn't have the improvement left in it that will be required to return to "normal".
I'd say you'll deffo be able to cycle again. I find that easy enough not sure about the running yet as I've not done it.
