Title: Scar issue
Post by: rubyred on September 29, 2012, 02:35:45 PM
Hey all,

I've got a fairly big scar from my op, around 12in, and the very top part of it is starting to fold over itself as it's healing. It's causing me a fair bit of discomfort whereas the rest of the incision is fine.

Is this a common occurance in scarring?

At about this time, my PT started some light massage around the wound to release scar tissue.

I'd talk to your surgeon's office about it and what they recommend.  My PT also showed me how to (lightly) massage the area.

Talk to the good doctor and see what they recommend. Scar tissue is definitely something I deal with.

Mr T's nurse wanted to check out the scar and she noted how it was starting to fold over but she was a bit nonchalent about it, didn't really tell me what to do about it so I assumed it was fine, but it's getting more painful. I guess it doesn't help that i'm having no PT at all. No one is telling me about scar tissue, muscle pain etc. Christine just said all was normal and gave me a year's appointment.

I may ring Mr T's secretary on Monday and see if she can ask him about it and what I can do, if anything.

I suspect that Christine is right. But if your in any doubt ask your local district nurse they are normally trained in the wound healing thingy.

Try Bio oil, Ruby, I rub mine in morning and night with a light 'massage'. It might help?

I was told by both Physio and dressings clinic nurse to gently rub in E45 cream or similar which I do morning and evening and so far it seems OK. On another note however at the top end of my scar there feels like the end of a stitch poking out? Not bothering me just feels odd so will mention it at 6 week check.

Thanks for all the replies. I've been using Bio Oil since the dressings came off a month ago, it's definately helped the centre part of my scar, not so much the outer edges as yet.

And Danny, I wouldn't trust the district nurses round here with a barge pole LOL.

Top of my scar was the last bit to feel comfy. I didn't rub oil or cream on mine just a bit of sand paper to smooth off the edges.
