Title: Half Marathon...
Post by: David on October 01, 2012, 07:45:30 AM
Hey all...
Did my first stand alone half-marathon this past weekend.
Was planning on this being my first race where I did not walk at all and was going to keep an 8:00 minute per mile pace.  The course was not very flat, but rolling hills.
I got caught up and ran a 7:05 first mile which was way too fast for my fitness.  I settled into a more comfortable pace and was able to average 7:29's with only the hilliest off road mile going to a 7:55 pace.
1:38 overall time.  I am very pleased based on my fitness and my hip was perfect.  A little soreness today in my hamstring on the non-BHR side, but that's from running a pace I haven't seen in a few years.
I am going to stick with my plan of running 3X a week this fall and work on increasing my cadence and strength.
Hope you are all at your best...
David

David, you are just kickin' it. Congratulations.

I find muscular soreness when I do something I haven't done in a while invigorating now - getting away from being scared for the hip and more psyched about the challenge.

Great job Dave!  That's an excellent time even without HR.  You are BACK!

I'm in a holding pattern right now, just getting in a short run every other day while I have a ball working on my house.

MaryEllen,  how are you doing?  Have you started to make any progress with your running?

Yes, I have!! In fact, I was doing so great... able to run 6 miles with zero pain... Just not a thought at all to my hip!! My pace was coming back down to near "pre-hip resurf" days... when in August I realized that my right hip was starting to feel like my left did right before I got the news I needed it resurfed. I have an appointment with my OS in 2 weeks, and I am certain I'll have my right done soon. (I'd like to do it before years end, but we'll see what his schedule allows). Thanks for asking!

Glad to hear this about your running (but sorry about your other hip)!  I was actually thinking about you while I was running on the muddy trails today.  :)

Sorry about the other hip MaryEllen.  I started to feel the same symptoms with my other hip as well, but Dr. Su assured me it looked good/the same as 2 years ago, just compensation for weakness still on the operated side.  Hope you can hold out for a while before having the other side done.
Best...

Thanks everyone. I just want to have hip issues a distant memory. Knowing that I can get back to normal is very encouraging. I will not be so impatient this time around.... I started running at 3-4 months with my right resurf. If I have my left done I'll wait!!!!
